Should you race here?

A race under a closed stadium roof, in the week Stockholm hands out the Nobel prizes.

Reasons to

  • The roof shuts, so a Swedish December happens outside the race rather than during it.
  • Nobel week and Lucia bracket the race, making it the most Swedish seven days of the year.
  • Stockholm's air averages 5.3 micrograms of PM2.5, among the cleanest of any race here.
  • Solna station is ten minutes' walk and the whole network is SEK 180 for a day.

Reasons not to

  • Six hours and thirteen minutes of daylight. You will not see the city in the light.
  • -3.0°C (27°F) overnight at 90% humidity, and ice on the pavements.
  • It is expensive: a plain meal is SEK 177 and Nobel week lifts the central room rates.
The one to take seriously. The dark is the thing to plan for, not the cold. The sun comes up at 08:35 and is gone by 14:48. An afternoon wave finishes at night, and anything you wanted to see in daylight has to fit a six-hour window. Book the sightseeing for the middle of the day and the race around it.

Conditions on the day

INTERSPORT HYROX Stockholm runs December 10th, 2026 to December 13th, 2026 at Strawberry Arena. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.

The catch

Around freezing, and dark by three

1°C (34°F) by day, -3°C (27°F) at night

Stockholm in mid-December

  • Daylight runs 08:35 to 14:48, six hours and thirteen minutes in total.
  • The December average reaches 1.3°C (34°F) by day and falls to -3.0°C (27°F) at night.
  • Humidity sits at 90%, so the cold gets through more than the number suggests.
  • About 48mm falls across thirteen days, as rain, sleet or snow depending on the hour.
  • Daylight
  • Dark
  • Bar height is temperature

Stockholm has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.

Strawberry Arena, your race is in this building

Sweden's national football stadium, in Solna north of the centre, with a retractable roof and room for fifty thousand.

Known for. Sweden internationals, the Swedish cup final, and the stadium concerts that fill the north of the city in summer.

The building. Opened in 2012 as Friends Arena, built beside Solna station with a shopping centre attached, and renamed in 2024.

Race day and start times

The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.

Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.

What that means for booking. Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.

What to bring

At the arena, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.

You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.

What your wristband does not cover

You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Stockholm one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.

Getting there on the morning

The commuter train to Solna, then ten minutes on foot. It will be dark and probably icy, so allow more than the map says.

What you need to book

Before you book

Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.

If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.

Flying into the city

Bromma is much closer but takes only a handful of domestic routes, and Skavsta is a hundred kilometres away.

Something to do with the rest of the weekend

Getting to Stockholm

Arlanda is about 50 minutes from Solna by commuter train, or 27 minutes by taxi for SEK 550 to 700.

The commuter train to Ulriksdal

Fifty minutes from Arlanda for about SEK 200 including the airport passage fee, and it stops nearer the arena than the Express does.

  • About SEK 200
  • about 50 min

Flygbussarna to Järva krog

The airport coach, about 52 minutes for SEK 110 to 140, stopping a short walk north of Solna. Cheaper than the train and about as quick.

  • SEK 110 to 140
  • about 52 min

Entry requirements

Sweden is in the Schengen area. Non-EU visitors who do not need a visa will need ETIAS authorisation once it starts.
Sweden is close to cashless and many places take no notes at all. Bring a card that works abroad.
Bring photo identification to check-in. Hyrox has not published which documents Stockholm accepts.

Quick tip

The Arlanda Express is faster but goes to the central station. The commuter train to Ulriksdal is slower and lands you nearer the arena.

Getting to the venue

Solna has hotels attached to the arena and a shopping centre, and nothing else. The centre is fifteen minutes away by train and is where you want the evening.

Solna station is ten minutes' walk from the arena and sits on the commuter rail rather than the metro, which catches people out. A 24-hour travelcard is SEK 180 and covers every train, tram, bus and boat in the city.

Where to stay

Solna has a hotel attached to the arena and a shopping centre next to it. Everything else is fifteen minutes south by train, and in December the evening matters.

  • The centre and the old town

The Nobel ceremony and banquet are on the Thursday of race week. Central rooms are dearer and scarcer than a normal December, and Solna is not.

Neighbourhoods worth the commute

Stockholm is a set of islands joined by bridges, and in December the question is how far you want to walk in the dark.

AreaTo the venueWhySuits
Vasastan about 14 min by train Nineteenth-century apartment blocks, neighbourhood cafes and no tourists. The quickest central district to the arena.
Norrmalm about 15 min by train The commercial centre, the main station and the concert hall where the Nobel ceremony happens. Convenient and plain.
Södermalm about 25 min by train The island south of the old town, where the independent shops and the best eating are. The most interesting evening.
Östermalm about 20 min by train Grand buildings, the market hall and the smartest hotels. Expensive, and beautiful in the snow.
Gamla Stan about 20 min by train The medieval old town on its own island, with the Christmas market in the square. Lovely and slow to walk through.

Eating before and after

The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.

The Solna shopping centre

Attached to the arena, with ordinary restaurants that serve early. It is not a night out, and the night before a race is not meant to be.

  • About SEK 177
  • 5 min from the venue
  • eat by seven

Vasastan

Fourteen minutes by train from Solna, full of neighbourhood kitchens that do a plain plate well. The best compromise between near and good.

  • About SEK 177
  • 14 min from the venue
  • order the pasta or the fish

Swedish winter food is meatballs, pickled things and potatoes. None of that is a hardship the night before a race.

Pelikan, Södermalm

A beer hall from 1904 with high ceilings and long tables, serving meatballs at SEK 275 to people who live here. The classic Stockholm dining room.

  • About SEK 275
  • Södermalm, 25 min from the venue

Blå Porten, Djurgården

A courtyard restaurant on Djurgården doing meatballs at SEK 208, which is cheap for Stockholm. Convenient if you are already out on the island.

  • order the meatballs and lingonberry

Race day supplies

The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.

Pack list

  • Real winter clothing. It is -3.0°C (27°F) overnight at 90% humidity, which is colder than the number reads.
  • Something with grip. December pavements here are ice as often as they are wet.
  • A head torch if you are running outside. It is dark before three in the afternoon.

Quick tips

  • Buy a 24-hour travelcard for SEK 180 rather than singles at SEK 43 each.
  • Sweden is close to cashless. A card works everywhere and cash often does not.

The shopping centre beside the arena has a supermarket and a pharmacy, which solves most of this. Swedish shops close earlier than you expect on a Sunday.

The last race in Stockholm

Strawberry Arena is a recent addition to the Hyrox calendar, so there is little previous form here to pass on.

What happened

The last edition, in short.

  • The arena is a football stadium with a roof that closes, not an exhibition hall. Entrances are stadium gates.
  • Solna station is a ten-minute walk and is on the commuter network rather than the metro.

What it means for you

How your race differs from that one.

  • Six hours and thirteen minutes of daylight. You will arrive in the dark and leave in it.
  • The Nobel ceremony is on the Thursday of race week, the one night Stockholm is genuinely full.

What else is on that weekend

The race lands in Nobel week, the one week of the year Stockholm puts on a show.

WhatWhenWhereWhat it means
The Nobel Prize ceremony10 DecemberKonserthuset, then the banquet at the City HallThe Thursday. Streets around Hötorget and the City Hall close, and the central hotels are full of people who are not here for a race.
Bo Kaspers Orkester10 to 12 DecemberCirkus, DjurgårdenThree nights across race week, on the island east of the centre. No effect on Solna.
The Christmas marketsThrough DecemberGamla Stan, Skansen and KungsträdgårdenWeekend afternoons in the old town are slow going. Skansen's market is the one worth the trip.
Lucia13 DecemberChurches across the cityThe last day of race week, and the Swedish midwinter festival. Processions at dawn, which here means eight o'clock.

What to see

Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.

The Vasa Museum

  • Djurgården
  • 10:00 to 15:00 on weekdays
  • allow three hours

Visit site

Gamla Stan

The old town on its own island, a grid of ochre buildings and lanes too narrow for cars, with the Christmas market in Stortorget. It is free, and best after dark in December.

  • Free to walk
  • Gamla Stan
  • allow two hours

Ninety minutes around the royal park island, flat, lit and mostly empty in December. Walk over the bridge or take the ferry from Slussen.

  • Free
  • Djurgården
  • about 90 minutes

Fjäderholmarna

The nearest archipelago island, thirty minutes out by boat for SEK 215 return. Winter sailings are limited, so check before you plan the day around it.

Fika, properly

A sauna and a cold plunge

Several bathhouses around the water do the Nordic sequence properly, and in a December that never gets above freezing it is the right way to spend an afternoon.
