Should you race here?
A three-minute train from the city centre, on the river that built the ships.
Reasons to
- Exhibition Centre station is four minutes from the concourse and three minutes from Glasgow Central.
- Rooms near the campus from about GBP 70, which is cheap for a European city race.
- Kelvingrove, the Burrell and the Riverside are all free and all within twenty minutes.
- Finnieston, which is on the campus doorstep, is the best eating district in Scotland.
Reasons not to
- One hundred and ten millimetres of rain across fifteen days. Half of March is wet.
- No airport train, so the airport leg is a taxi or a bus and a change.
- Country to Country has the arena next door for all three days, which makes rooms scarce.
Conditions on the day

Glasgow has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Scottish Event Campus, your race is in this building
A campus of halls on the north bank of the Clyde, with the aluminium-shelled Armadillo and the SSE Hydro arena beside them and a railway station four minutes away.
Known for. COP26, the Commonwealth Games, and the Armadillo, which Norman Foster designed to look like a set of overlapping ship hulls.
The building. Built in 1985 on the Queen's Dock, where the shipyards used to be, and extended with the Armadillo in 1997 and the Hydro in 2013.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At the SEC, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Glasgow one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
The train from Glasgow Central to Exhibition Centre, three minutes, then four on foot. It will probably be raining.
What you need to book
Before you book
Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Edinburgh is 50 minutes away by train with a wider network, and Prestwick takes some low-cost flights.

Most people fly in for one race and see nothing. The day before is dead time if you do not plan it.

Getting to Glasgow
Glasgow airport is 15 to 20 minutes from the SEC by taxi, for about GBP 25 to 30.
Taxi from Glasgow airport
Fifteen to twenty minutes and about GBP 25 to 30. There is no airport train, so this is the simple route.
The train from Glasgow Central
One stop west to Exhibition Centre, three minutes, then four minutes on foot. The easiest venue approach on this calendar.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
There is no airport train. The bus to Glasgow Central and then one stop on the train is the public route, at 30 to 40 minutes.
Getting to the venue
Finnieston is beside the campus and has the restaurants. The city centre is three minutes away by train, so either works.
Exhibition Centre station is four minutes from the concourse and three minutes by train from Glasgow Central, which makes this one of the shortest venue-to-centre journeys on the calendar. There is no airport train, so the airport leg is a bus to Central or a taxi.
Where to stay
Finnieston is the district the SEC sits in and the city centre is three minutes away by train. Both work, and the West End is ten minutes further.

1. Hotels in Finnieston
From about GBP 70 a night, with Argyle Street's restaurants a few minutes away. Closest and best placed.
2. Hotels in the city centre
The main stations, the shopping and most of the hotel stock, at about GBP 97 a night. Three minutes on the train.
3. Hotels in the West End
Leafy, Victorian and full of cafes, with the Kelvingrove museum and the Botanic Gardens. The nicest base.
Country to Country runs three nights in the Hydro on the same campus, and both Glasgow clubs are at home on the Saturday. Book months ahead, not weeks.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Glasgow is compact and the train from Exhibition Centre reaches the middle in three minutes. Everything below is close.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finnieston | 5 to 15 min on foot | The strip of Argyle Street behind the campus, which went from shipyard housing to the best eating in the city in about a decade. | |
| The city centre | about 3 min by train | The Victorian grid, the two mainline stations and the shopping. Convenient and busy. | |
| The West End | about 10 min by subway | The university, Kelvingrove, the Botanic Gardens and Byres Road. Where you would live if you lived here. | |
| Merchant City | about 8 min by train | Converted tobacco warehouses east of the centre, with galleries, bars and the oldest buildings in Glasgow. | |
| The Southside | about 15 min by train | Across the river, residential and green, with Pollok Park and the Burrell Collection in it. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Finnieston, by the campus
Five to ten minutes on foot, with places that serve from five and will do you pasta without fuss. The shortest walk back to your hotel on this calendar.
The city centre
Three minutes by train, with everything from chains to proper restaurants around the stations. Convenient if you are staying there anyway.
Glasgow has fed itself on Indian and Italian food for a century, and Finnieston does the modern Scottish version.
A Glasgow curry
The city claims to have invented chicken tikka masala and has been arguing about it since. India Quay is five hundred metres from the campus and there are dozens more.
Argyle Street, Finnieston
A few hundred metres of small restaurants behind the campus, doing seafood, small plates and whatever is landed on the west coast that morning.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- A proper waterproof, not a shower-resistant one. One hundred and ten millimetres across fifteen March days.
- A warm layer. It is 2.1°C (36°F) overnight and the wind comes off the Atlantic.
- Spare shoes. Whatever you walk in will be wet by the evening.
Quick tips
- Buy the train ticket from Central to Exhibition Centre at the machine. It is three minutes and a few pounds.
- Book the room months ahead. Country to Country has the arena next door for the whole weekend.
Finnieston has supermarkets within a few minutes and the centre is three minutes by train. Nothing here needs planning.
The last race in Glasgow
The Scottish Event Campus is a recent addition to the Hyrox calendar, so there is little previous form here to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- Exhibition Centre station is four minutes from the main concourse and three minutes by train from Glasgow Central.
- The campus holds several halls plus the Armadillo and the Hydro, so check which building.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- Country to Country is at the OVO Hydro on the same campus across all three race days.
- One hundred and ten millimetres of rain across fifteen March days. Glasgow earns its reputation.
What else is on that weekend
One of the busiest weekends the SEC campus has, and the race is sharing it.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Country to Country | 12 to 14 March | The OVO Hydro, on the same campus | All three race days. The Hydro holds 14,000 and it is a few hundred metres from the halls, so the station, the car parks and the bars are full every afternoon and evening. |
| Six Nations Super Saturday, England against Scotland | 13 March, 16:40 | Twickenham, and every pub in Glasgow | The Saturday. Scotland are away, so the city watches it rather than empties for it, and every bar is standing room from four. |
| Celtic against St Johnstone, Rangers against Motherwell | 13 March | Celtic Park and Ibrox | Both Glasgow clubs at home on the Saturday. Ibrox is two miles from the SEC on the same subway line. |
| Rush at the Hydro, just before | 8 and 10 March | The OVO Hydro | Two nights the week before. Gone by race week, but it tightens the hotel stock across the whole fortnight. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
A red sandstone pile in the West End holding Dali's Christ of Saint John of the Cross, a Spitfire and an elephant, all in the same building. Free, and the best thing in the city.
The Burrell Collection
A shipping magnate's collection in a purpose-built pavilion in Pollok Park, reopened in 2022 after six years of work. It is free, and quieter than Kelvingrove.
The Mackintosh buildings
Charles Rennie Mackintosh built across this city, and the Willow Tea Rooms, the Lighthouse and Scotland Street School are all still standing and open.
The Riverside Museum
Zaha Hadid's transport museum on the Clyde, fifteen minutes' walk from the venue, with a tall ship moored outside it. Free.
What to do
The Clyde walkway
A flat paved path along the river, running past the campus in both directions. The obvious shake-out, and it passes the Finnieston crane.
Kelvingrove Park
Eighty-five acres of Victorian park behind the museum, with the river Kelvin running through it. Ten minutes from the campus and the best run in the city.
The subway
A circular underground line opened in 1896, the third oldest in the world, with orange trains and fifteen stops. It takes twenty-four minutes to go all the way round.
Loch Lomond
Forty-five minutes north and the Highlands start. The southern end of the loch is reachable by train and the water is the edge of the national park.
