Should you race here?
A venue inside a riverside park, in a city where every bus, train and ferry costs fifty cents.
Reasons to
- Any Translink journey is AUD 0.50 flat, including the river ferries.
- The venue sits in the South Bank parklands, with free galleries and a swimming lagoon outside.
- Two stations are minutes away and the CBD is a fifteen-minute walk.
- A CBD room averages about AUD 161, cheaper than staying at South Bank.
Reasons not to
- It runs hot at both ends: 29°C (85°F) by day, 20°C (68°F) overnight.
- 138mm of rain across about ten days in March.
- The Airtrain is priced outside the fifty-cent fare and is the one costly journey.
- No 2027 event listings were reachable, so the city's calendar is unchecked.

Brisbane has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, your race is in this building
A convention centre at South Bank, across the river from the city, with the parklands and the museums on its doorstep.
Known for. Conventions and concerts, and for sitting in the middle of the South Bank cultural precinct rather than on an industrial estate.
The building. Opened in 1995 on the Expo 88 site, which Brisbane kept as parkland instead of selling, and extended in 2012.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page a few days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At BCEC, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Brisbane one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
CityTrain to South Brisbane or South Bank, both minutes from the centre, for fifty cents.
What you need to book
Before you book
The listing runs 31 March to 5 April, six days, so confirm your division's day before booking anything.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Gold Coast airport is about ninety minutes south and takes some domestic and New Zealand routes.

Getting to Brisbane
Brisbane airport connects by Airtrain to South Brisbane, a short walk from the centre.
The Airtrain
From the airport to South Brisbane, then a short walk to the centre. It is priced separately from the fifty-cent network fare.
Anything else, for fifty cents
Every other Translink journey, bus, train or ferry, costs fifty cents flat regardless of distance. There is no cheaper city transport on this calendar.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
The Airtrain is priced outside the 50-cent fare, so it is the one expensive journey you will make here.
Getting to the venue
South Bank is the venue's own precinct and walkable. The CBD is across the river and generally cheaper.
Queensland charges 50 cents for any Translink journey, whatever the distance, which makes getting around Brisbane close to free. The Airtrain from the airport is the exception and is priced separately.
Where to stay
The venue is at South Bank on the south side of the river. The CBD is across one of the bridges.

1. Hotels in South Bank
The venue's own precinct, with the parklands, the galleries and the river. About AUD 250 a night and a walk to the door.
2. Hotels in the CBD
The city centre over the Victoria or Kurilpa bridge, averaging about AUD 161, which is cheaper than South Bank and barely further.
3. Hotels in West End
A relaxed, mixed neighbourhood of cafes, markets and independent shops. Good eating near the race, and none of it corporate.
No competing event was confirmed for these dates, though the listings pass returned the wrong year, so treat that as unchecked rather than clear.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Brisbane bends around its river, with the venue on the south bank and the city centre inside the loop opposite.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Bank | 5 to 15 min on foot | The parklands built on the Expo 88 site, with a swimming lagoon, the state galleries and the museum. The venue is in the middle of it. | |
| Brisbane CBD | about 15 min on foot | The centre across the river, with the shopping, the offices and cheaper rooms than South Bank. Quiet after work. | |
| West End | about 20 min | South-west of the venue, relaxed and multicultural, with the Saturday markets and the best casual eating nearby. | |
| Fortitude Valley | about 25 min | North-east of the centre, where the live music and the nightlife are. Loud, and the furthest of these from the race. | |
| New Farm | about 30 min | Leafy and residential along a river bend, with the powerhouse arts centre and a quieter pace. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Olio Café and Bar
In the centre's own Grey Street foyer, so it is the closest option there is. No meal price is published, and it is a cafe rather than a dinner place.
West End
Twenty minutes south-west, with ordinary kitchens doing pasta, rice and grilled fish. More choice and lower prices than South Bank.
Queensland food means seafood off the bay, and one crustacean with a name that confuses every visitor.
Moreton Bay bugs
A flat slipper lobster from the bay, sweeter than prawn and no relation to any insect. River Quay Fish at South Bank serves them beside the water.
Barramundi
The northern Australian fish that appears on nearly every menu here, firm enough to grill and best kept simple.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Hot-weather kit. It is 29°C (85°F) by day and stays at 20°C (68°F) overnight.
- A rain jacket for the subtropical downpours: 138mm across about ten days.
- Strong sun protection. The UV index in Queensland is extreme even in autumn.
Quick tips
- Every Translink journey is fifty cents. Do not buy a pass.
- Start any run before seven. By nine the heat is already a factor.
South Bank and West End both have supermarkets within fifteen minutes. Australian shops keep long hours, Sundays included.
The last race in Brisbane
Hyrox raced in Brisbane in April 2026. No source confirms the hall or the layout from that edition, so there is little local form to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- A single journey anywhere on Translink is 50 cents, which is not a typographical error.
- South Bank and South Brisbane stations both serve the centre.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- It is 29°C (85°F) by day and 20°C (68°F) overnight, which is hot for a race but not the hottest here.
- 138mm of rain falls across about ten days in March, which is fourth wettest on this calendar.
What else is on that weekend
Nothing confirmed for the race dates, though the search that should have found it came back with the wrong year.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing confirmed for 2027 | 31 March to 5 April | Across Brisbane | The listings pass returned 2026 dates rather than 2027, so this is an absence of evidence rather than proof the city is quiet. |
| The South Bank parklands | All weekend | Beside the venue | Open all year with a swimming lagoon, free and immediately outside the doors. |
| The Queensland Museum and GOMA | All weekend | South Bank, next to the venue | Both are within a few minutes of the hall and both have free general entry. |
| The river | All weekend | Past the venue | CityCat ferries run along it for the same 50-cent fare, which is the best way to see the city. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
GOMA and the Queensland Art Gallery
Two connected galleries beside the venue, strongest on Asian and Pacific art. General entry is free and the buildings open onto the river.
The South Bank lagoon
A free public swimming beach with real sand, in a park, two hundred metres from the hall. Lifeguarded and open all year.
The Queensland Museum
Natural history and state history next door to the galleries, with a Pleistocene megafauna hall and free general entry.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
The oldest koala sanctuary in the world, reachable by river cruise upstream. Touristy, and the only place most visitors will hold one.
What to do
The riverwalk
A continuous path along both banks, flat and shaded in places, passing the venue. Start early: by nine it is already warm.
A CityCat down the river
Fast ferries that run the length of the city for the same fifty cents as a bus. The cheapest sightseeing anywhere on this calendar.
Mount Coot-tha
The hill west of the city with a lookout over the whole river bend and the bay beyond. Twenty minutes by car and best at dusk.
The Story Bridge climb
A guided walk over the arch of the 1940 cantilever bridge, eighty metres above the water. Booked ahead and not for the day before you race.
