Should you race here?
A fairground with its own station, in the middle of German Christmas market season.
Reasons to
- Frankfurt (Main) Messe station is inside the fairground, and the airport is 25 minutes away.
- The Christmas market runs all race week, from Römerberg down to the river.
- Rooms at the Messe start around EUR 99 and an ordinary meal is about EUR 15.
- High-speed trains from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam stop one S-Bahn stop away.
Reasons not to
- Eight hours of daylight, 0.4°C (33°F) overnight and 89% humidity.
- The fairground district has nothing in it but the fairground.
- Frankfurt is a business city, and in December it shows.

Frankfurt has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Messe Frankfurt, your race is in this building
One of the three largest trade fair grounds in the world, a short walk west of the centre. It has its own S-Bahn station and a 1909 Festhalle at the heart of it.
Known for. The Frankfurt Book Fair, Ambiente and the motor show, and the Festhalle, which was the largest domed building in Europe when it opened.
The building. Frankfurt has held fairs since the twelfth century. The present site grew around the Festhalle of 1909 and now runs to ten halls.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At the Messe, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Frankfurt one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
The S-Bahn to Frankfurt (Main) Messe. Trains run from about four in the morning, which covers every wave.
What you need to book
Before you book
Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Frankfurt-Hahn is a hundred kilometres away in another state, so check which airport a cheap fare actually means.

Getting to Frankfurt
Frankfurt airport is about 25 minutes from the Messe by S-Bahn, with one change at the Hauptbahnhof.
The S-Bahn from the airport
S8 or S9 to the Hauptbahnhof, then any of S3 to S6 to Messe. About 25 minutes end to end for EUR 6.90.
High-speed trains
The Hauptbahnhof has direct ICE and Thalys services from Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne, and it is one S-Bahn stop from the venue.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
A taxi from the airport is 15 minutes and EUR 30 to 35, which is worth it late at night and not otherwise.
Getting to the venue
The Messe has hotels at its gates and the Bahnhofsviertel is one stop away. The old town is fifteen minutes and is where the Christmas market is.
Frankfurt (Main) Messe has its own S-Bahn station on the fairground, and four lines stop there. From the airport it is one change at the Hauptbahnhof and about 25 minutes in total, which is as easy as European race transfers get.
Where to stay
The Messe has hotels at its gates and the station quarter is one stop away. The old town is fifteen minutes and has the Christmas market in it.
Open in Google Maps · Get directions
1. Hotels at the Messe
Business hotels from about EUR 99 a night, built for the fairs. Closest to the hall and quiet in December.
2. Hotels in the Bahnhofsviertel
The station quarter: rough in places, excellent for food, and one S-Bahn stop from the venue.
3. Hotels in the Altstadt and Innenstadt
Where the Christmas market is, and where December room prices reflect it.
The Christmas market runs through the whole of race week, which lifts prices in the old town and leaves the Messe hotels at their ordinary rates.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Frankfurt is small for a city with this skyline, and the S-Bahn makes all of it short. These are the districts worth the ride.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Westend | about 10 min on foot | Grand villas and quiet streets between the Messe and the banks, with the Palmengarten in the middle. Nearest and calmest. | |
| Bahnhofsviertel | about 8 min by train | The station quarter, with cheap kitchens from four continents and an edge to it after dark. One stop from the venue. | |
| Altstadt | about 15 min by train | The rebuilt old town around Römerberg, where the Christmas market is. Small, crowded in December and genuinely pretty. | |
| Sachsenhausen | about 20 min by train | Across the river, with the museum embankment on one side and the apple-wine taverns on the other. | |
| Bornheim | about 20 min by train | A residential district north-east with Berger Strasse running through it, where people who live here actually eat. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
The Messe hotels
Built for fair crowds, so they serve early and quickly, and they are five minutes from the hall. They are dull, and this is the night for it.
Bockenheim
The student district just north of the Messe, with cheap kitchens along Leipziger Strasse. Ten minutes on foot and half the price of the centre.
Frankfurt food is green sauce, schnitzel and sausage, and the Bahnhofsviertel does everything else better than the centre.
Grüne Soße at Apfelwein Wagner
Seven herbs, sour cream, boiled eggs and potatoes, which is the dish Frankfurt is actually known for. About EUR 14.50 in a Sachsenhausen tavern from 1931.
The Bahnhofsviertel
Eritrean, Thai, Turkish and Korean kitchens in a few blocks around the station, most of them under fifteen euros. Nowhere in Frankfurt eats better, and nowhere looks worse.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Proper winter clothing. The overnight average is 0.4°C (33°F) at 89% humidity.
- Waterproofs. Rain falls on fourteen December days and fog fills most of the rest.
- Cash. Germany still has places that take no card at all, including some taverns.
Quick tips
- Buy a day ticket at EUR 7.75 rather than singles at EUR 3.80.
- German shops shut on Sunday. Buy anything you need on Saturday or at the station.
The Hauptbahnhof concourse has supermarkets open on a Sunday, which in Germany is worth knowing. Almost nothing else is.
The last race in Frankfurt
Messe Frankfurt is a recent addition to the Hyrox calendar, so there is little previous form here to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- The race is in Hall 3.1 on a ten-hall site, so check the hall and the entrance before you set off.
- Frankfurt (Main) Messe station is on the site, served by the S3, S4, S5 and S6.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- The Christmas market is on at Römerberg all race week, which fills the centre every afternoon.
- Eight hours of daylight, and the overnight average is 0.4°C (33°F).
What else is on that weekend
Christmas market season, with nothing competing for the fairground itself.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Frankfurt Christmas market | 23 November to 22 December | Römerberg, Paulsplatz, Mainkai and the Hauptwache | All race week, open daily to nine. The old town is slow going from mid-afternoon and the hotels near it are fuller. |
| Gregory Porter | 12 December | Alte Oper, Opernplatz | Saturday night in the centre, ten minutes from the Messe. No effect on the morning. |
| City of the Sun, then Avatar and The Tubs | 11 and 13 December | Brotfabrik, Zoom and Nachtleben | Small clubs on the Friday and Sunday. Nothing that moves a hotel price. |
| The Festhallen Reitturnier | From 16 December | The Festhalle, on the fairground | The international horse show takes over the Festhalle three days after racing ends. Worth knowing only if you stay on. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
The Städel Museum
Seven centuries of European painting in a building on the museum embankment, with a modern wing buried under the lawn and lit through portholes in the grass.
The cathedral and its tower
The Gothic church where Holy Roman Emperors were elected and crowned. The cathedral is free and the tower climb is three euros for the view over the old town.
The Palmengarten
A botanical garden five minutes from the Messe, with glasshouses that are warm and humid in a way December Frankfurt is not. Ten euros during the winter exhibition.
Römerberg
The square of half-timbered gables in front of the old town hall, all of it rebuilt after 1944, and in December full of a Christmas market. It is free, and best after dark.
What to do
The Christmas market
One of the oldest in Germany, running from Römerberg along the river to the Hauptwache, open daily until nine. Glühwein, bratwurst and a very large tree.
The Mainufer path
A flat riverside path along both banks, lit and used by runners at every hour. The museum embankment is on the south side and the skyline on the north.
Apple wine in Sachsenhausen
Sour local cider served from a blue stoneware jug, in taverns that have not changed much. It is an acquired taste, and the acquiring is the point.
A day in Mainz or Heidelberg
Mainz is 35 minutes by train and has the Gutenberg Museum. Heidelberg is an hour and has the castle. Both are better uses of a Monday than Frankfurt is.
