Should you race here?

A Metro stop at the door, in the one month of the year this city is comfortable to be outside in.

Reasons to

  • Pazhou on Metro line 8 is next to the building.
  • November is the best month here: 25°C (76°F) by day and 67% humidity.
  • An ordinary meal is about CNY 30, and this is one of the great food cities.
  • Only 35mm of rain across the month, on about five days.

Reasons not to

  • No airport transfer time or fare is published for this address, so the journey in is unplanned.
  • Hyrox's own page and the Chinese ticketing page disagree on the race dates.
  • No hotel rate near the venue was reachable, so the cost of the weekend is harder to pin down.
The one to take seriously. Confirm your race day before you book anything. Hyrox lists 21 to 22 November and the Chinese ticketing page lists 20 to 22, and a one-day error here is an expensive one. The other thing to sort before you travel is a working mobile payment app, because a foreign card is close to useless away from the hotels.

Conditions on the day

Guangzhou has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.

Poly World Trade Center Expo, your race is in this building

Six exhibition halls in Pazhou, the convention quarter on the south bank of the Pearl River, with a Metro station next door.

Known for. Trade fairs. Pazhou is where Guangzhou puts its exhibitions, and the Canton Fair complex is along the same road.

The building. Pazhou was farmland and river island until the 2000s, when the city moved its fair grounds across the water and built the district around them.

Race day and start times

The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.

Hyrox links individual start times on the event page a few days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.

What that means for booking. Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, and confirm which of the disputed dates your division falls on.

What to bring

At the venue, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.

You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.

What your wristband does not cover

You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Guangzhou one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.

Getting there on the morning

Metro line 8 to Pazhou, next to the building. The Guangzhou Metro starts around six, which covers the early waves.

What you need to book

Before you book

Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, and confirm which of the disputed dates your division falls on.

If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.

Flying into the city

Hong Kong and Shenzhen are both close by high-speed rail, which can be cheaper on a long-haul ticket.

Something to do with the rest of the weekend

Most people fly in for one race and see nothing. The day before is dead time if you do not plan it.

Getting to Guangzhou

Guangzhou Baiyun International is the airport, and Pazhou is on Metro line 8 on the south bank.

Metro line 8 to Pazhou

The station is next to the building, so the last part of the journey is a walk of a few minutes. A day ticket is CNY 20 and covers everything.

Entry requirements

China requires a visa for most nationalities, though a growing list of countries has visa-free entry for short stays. Check the current rules for your passport well before you book.
Bring your passport to check-in. Hyrox has not published which documents Guangzhou accepts.

Quick tip

No source publishes a verified airport transfer time to this address, so plan the journey on a live map rather than on an estimate.

Getting to the venue

Haizhu is the venue's own district and Pazhou is its convention end. Tianhe across the river is the modern centre, Yuexiu the old one.

Where to stay

The venue is in Pazhou, the convention end of Haizhu district on the south bank. Tianhe and Yuexiu are across the river.

Neighbourhoods worth the commute

Guangzhou sits either side of the Pearl River, with the venue on the south bank and most of the city on the north.

AreaTo the venueWhySuits
Pazhou 5 to 15 min on foot The convention quarter of Haizhu district, built around the exhibition halls. Functional, quiet and next to the race.
Haizhu 10 to 20 min by Metro The wider island district, with riverfront walks and ordinary neighbourhoods behind the fair grounds.
Tianhe about 20 min by Metro Zhujiang New Town and the financial towers, with the opera house, the malls and the best of the new restaurants.
Yuexiu about 25 min by Metro The historic centre: Yuexiu Park, the old markets and the city's oldest streets.
Liwan about 30 min by Metro The traditional west, where the Cantonese food is. Shamian Island and the old teahouses are here.

Eating before and after

The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.

Around the exhibition halls

Pazhou's hotels and malls feed the fair crowds, so there is plain rice and noodles within a few minutes of the venue. No source names a specific place with a price, so pick by the queue.

  • About CNY 30
  • 5 min from the venue
  • eat by seven

Zhujiang New Town

Twenty minutes across the river, with a floor of restaurants under most of the towers. Easy, air-conditioned and reliably open late.

  • About CNY 50
  • Tianhe, 20 min from the venue
  • order the plain congee

This is the home of Cantonese cooking, which means dim sum in the morning and roast goose in the evening.

Dim sum at Tao Tao Ju

  • Liwan, 30 min from the venue
  • order the har gow and go before ten

Roast goose

Crisp skin, a dark sweet glaze and a plum sauce on the side. The Cantonese dish worth crossing the city for, and the one to have after you race rather than before.

  • About CNY 80 to 130
  • Liwan, 30 min from the venue
  • order it with rice

Race day supplies

The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.

Pack list

  • Light clothing. It reaches 25°C (76°F) by day even in late November.
  • Something warmer for the evening, when it drops to 16°C (61°F).
  • A payment app that works in China. Cash and foreign cards are awkward in small places.

Quick tips

  • Buy a Metro day ticket at CNY 20 rather than singles at CNY 2 to 7.
  • The auto show fills Pazhou from 27 November. Book your room before rates move for it.

Pazhou has convenience stores and supermarkets in the malls around the halls. Mobile payment is the norm and some small places take nothing else, so set one up before you travel.

The last race in Guangzhou

No previous Guangzhou edition could be confirmed from any published source, so there is no local form to pass on.

What happened

The last edition, in short.

  • Pazhou station on Metro line 8 is next to the building.
  • The venue has six halls, so check which one before you choose a door.

What it means for you

How your race differs from that one.

  • Hyrox's own page lists 21 to 22 November and the Chinese ticketing page lists 20 to 22. Confirm your division's day before booking.
  • A Metro day ticket is CNY 20 against CNY 2 to 7 a journey.

What else is on that weekend

A busy exhibition month in the city, though nothing lands on the race days themselves.
