Should you race here?

A cheap, hot race in a city that eats better than almost anywhere on this calendar.

Reasons to

  • An ordinary meal is about MYR 20 and a bowl of chicken rice half that.
  • Malay, Chinese and Indian food in the same ten streets, and that is the actual reason to come.
  • Batu Caves, the Islamic Arts Museum and real jungle are all within half an hour.
  • Twelve hours of daylight and 29.9°C (86°F) while Europe races in the dark.

Reasons not to

  • 86% humidity, which is the highest of any race in this window and will cost you time.
  • No rail line reaches MITEC, so every journey is a car in Kuala Lumpur traffic.
  • BTS play two stadium nights on your two race days, so rooms will be scarce and expensive.
The one to take seriously. The humidity is the race here, not the heat. 29.9°C (86°F) at 86% means sweat does not evaporate, so your usual cooling does not work and your pace from a cooler country will not hold. Arrive at least a day early, drink more than feels necessary, and plan the first run slower.

Conditions on the day

AirAsia HYROX Kuala Lumpur runs December 10th, 2026 to December 13th, 2026 at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.

The catch

Hot, and the wettest race in the window

30°C (86°F) by day, 24°C (75°F) at night

Kuala Lumpur in mid-December

  • The December average reaches 29.9°C (86°F) by day and only falls to 23.7°C (75°F) at night.
  • Humidity sits at 86%, higher than any other race in this window.
  • 377mm of rain falls across sixteen days, usually as a heavy hour in the afternoon.
  • Daylight runs 07:09 to 19:05, and barely changes across the year this close to the equator.

Kuala Lumpur has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.

Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, your race is in this building

The largest exhibition centre in Malaysia, in the new KL Metropolis district north-west of the centre, about twelve minutes from the twin towers by road.

Known for. The trade fairs that moved out of the old city convention centre, and a roof shaped like a woven songket.

The building. Opened in 2017 as the anchor of KL Metropolis, a district built on what had been the Matrade exhibition site.

Race day and start times

The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.

Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.

What that means for booking. Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.

What to bring

At MITEC, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.

You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.

What your wristband does not cover

You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Kuala Lumpur one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.

Getting there on the morning

Book a Grab in the app. Mornings are the one time Kuala Lumpur traffic is reasonable.

What you need to book

Before you book

Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.

If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.

Flying into the city

Terminal 2 is the AirAsia terminal and is a separate building, with its own KLIA Ekspres stop.

Something to do with the rest of the weekend

Most people fly in for one race and see nothing. The day before is dead time if you do not plan it.

Getting to Kuala Lumpur

KLIA Ekspres runs from the airport to KL Sentral in 28 minutes for MYR 55, and the last leg to MITEC is a bus or a Grab.

KLIA Ekspres then a Grab

Twenty-eight minutes from the airport to KL Sentral for MYR 55, then fifteen minutes by car to MITEC. The fastest route in.

Visit site

  • MYR 55
  • about 28 min, plus the last leg

Buses 821 and 851

They stop at Matrade South, a four-minute walk from the hall, and they are the only public transport that reaches it.

  • MYR 3
  • 4 min walk

Entry requirements

Many nationalities enter Malaysia visa-free for 30 or 90 days. Everyone must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online before arriving.
Bring your passport to check-in. Hyrox has not published which documents Kuala Lumpur accepts.

Quick tip

Install Grab before you fly. It is how the city moves, and it is cheaper than a metered taxi.

Getting to the venue

Mont Kiara is the closest district with hotels in it. KLCC and Bukit Bintang are about fifteen minutes by road and have everything else.

No train reaches MITEC, which is the one awkward thing about this race. The KLIA Ekspres gets you to KL Sentral in 28 minutes and after that it is a bus to Matrade South or, for almost everyone, a Grab.

Where to stay

MITEC sits in a new district with few hotels in it. Mont Kiara next door is the nearest option, and KLCC or Bukit Bintang are fifteen minutes by road with everything else.

Neighbourhoods worth the commute

Kuala Lumpur is spread out and the traffic is the variable, so everything below is a road journey rather than a walk.

AreaTo the venueWhySuits
Mont Kiara about 8 min by road A residential hill of apartment towers next to the venue, with international schools, malls and quiet streets.
KLCC about 12 min by road The twin towers, a park with a running loop, and the city's smartest hotels. Twelve minutes without traffic.
Bukit Bintang about 20 min by road Malls, massage shops and Jalan Alor, which is a street of grills and plastic stools. The loudest and the most fun.
Chinatown about 20 min by road Shophouses, temples and Petaling Street, with the oldest kitchens in the city and the cheapest beds.
Bangsar about 20 min by road Where people live rather than visit, with cafes, a night market and no towers. The calmest evening on this list.

Eating before and after

The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.

Mont Kiara, next to the venue

Malls and cafes eight minutes from the hall, with international food and early hours. Plain, close and exactly what the night before wants.

  • About MYR 30
  • 8 min from the venue
  • order rice or noodles

Chicken rice, anywhere

Poached chicken, rice cooked in the stock and a bowl of soup, for about ten ringgit in any coffee shop in the city. The plainest good meal in Asia.

  • About MYR 10
  • everywhere, including Mont Kiara
  • eat early

Malaysian food is Malay, Chinese and Indian at the same table, and it is the reason to come a day early.

Nasi lemak at Village Park

Coconut rice, sambal, anchovies and fried chicken, done better here than anywhere and argued about across the country. Ten to fifteen ringgit, and a queue by eight in the morning.

  • MYR 10 to 15
  • Damansara Utama, 15 min from the venue
  • order the ayam goreng

Wong Ah Wah, Jalan Alor

Grilled chicken wings on a street of grills, open until four in the morning. Twenty-five to fifty ringgit and worth the twenty-minute ride after you race.

  • MYR 25 to 50
  • Jalan Alor, 20 min from the venue
  • order the wings and the kangkung

Race day supplies

The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.

Pack list

  • Far more electrolytes than a European race. 29.9°C (86°F) at 86% humidity is the hardest combination in this window.
  • Something waterproof and light. It rains on sixteen days in December, hard and briefly.
  • A layer for indoors. Malaysian air conditioning is set very cold.

Quick tips

  • Install Grab before you fly, and link a card. It is how everyone moves here.
  • Book your room before the BTS dates are announced to your competitors.

KL Metropolis is still being built and has little in it. Mont Kiara has supermarkets and pharmacies eight minutes away.

The last race in Kuala Lumpur

MITEC is a recent addition to the Hyrox calendar, so there is little previous form here to pass on.

What happened

The last edition, in short.

  • The centre has halls on several levels, so check your floor as well as your hall.
  • No rail line reaches MITEC. The bus stop is a four-minute walk and everyone else will use Grab.

What it means for you

How your race differs from that one.

  • BTS are at Bukit Jalil on both race days. Hotel rooms across the city will be gone months ahead.
  • December is the wet season here: 377mm across sixteen days, usually in short heavy afternoons.

What else is on that weekend

One of the biggest weekends Kuala Lumpur will have all year, and it is not the race.

WhatWhenWhereWhat it means
BTS12 and 13 DecemberBukit Jalil National StadiumBoth race days. Eighty thousand people a night, twice. Every hotel in the city will be booked out months ahead.
DIOR Da Ying12 and 13 DecemberUnifi Arena, Bukit JalilThe same two nights at the same end of the city. Bukit Jalil will be impassable after nine.
Limp Bizkit9 DecemberThe National Hockey Stadium, Bukit JalilThe night before the race week starts. Gone before you need the roads.
The monsoonAll DecemberEverywhereSixteen rain days in the month. It usually arrives in the afternoon, hard, and is over inside an hour.

What to see

Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.

Batu Caves
