Cologne has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Koelnmesse, your race is in this building
One of the largest exhibition grounds in Europe, on the right bank at Deutz, with its own S-Bahn station three minutes from the south entrance.
Known for. Gamescom, Anuga and FIBO, the fitness trade show this race is part of.
The building. The grounds opened in 1924 and the brick entrance halls survive from then, with the modern halls built around them since.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page a few days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At Koelnmesse, Hall 10.1 through Entrance East, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Cologne one admits you to, or how it relates to FIBO entry. Check-in is open only on the day you race.
Getting there on the morning
S-Bahn to Köln Messe/Deutz, three minutes from the south entrance, then round to Entrance East. Trains start early enough for the first waves.
What you need to book
Before you book
The listing runs 8 to 11 April alongside FIBO, so confirm your division's day before booking the last night.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Düsseldorf is 40 minutes away by train and Frankfurt about an hour, both with more long-haul routes.

The train from Cologne Bonn
Direct to Köln Messe/Deutz in about thirteen minutes for seven to ten euros, with no change and no need to enter the city.

The listing names Entrance East for Hall 10.1, which is not the entrance nearest the station. Lines 3 and 4 serve that side directly.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
That train puts you three minutes from the venue without entering the city, which is the shortest door-to-door of any race here.
Getting to the venue
Deutz is the venue's own district, on the right bank beside the Messe. The Altstadt is one stop across the Rhine and is where most people want to be.
Köln Messe/Deutz is three minutes from the south entrance on four S-Bahn lines, and the airport train reaches it directly in about thirteen minutes. Entrance East is the one named on the listing, served by tram lines 3 and 4, so check which end you want before you set off.
Where to stay
The venue is at Deutz on the right bank. The cathedral and the old town are one stop across the Rhine.
Open in Google Maps · Get directions
1. Hotels in Deutz
The venue's own district, with the station, the arena and the river. About EUR 76 a night in an ordinary week, and the shortest walk.
2. Hotels in Altstadt-Nord
The old town, the cathedral and the main station, one stop over the bridge. Where most visitors stay and where FIBO fills first.
3. Hotels in the Belgian Quarter
Cafes, independent shops and the better bars, quieter than the old town. Twenty minutes out and usually easier to book.
FIBO fills Cologne on exactly these dates, drawing tens of thousands of trade visitors into the same grounds. Book as early as you can, and look at Deutz and the Belgian Quarter before the old town.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Cologne sits on the Rhine with the Messe on the right bank and the old city on the left.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deutz | 5 to 15 min on foot | The right bank around the Messe and the arena, with the best view of the cathedral from the river path. Practical and close. | |
| Altstadt-Nord | about 10 min by S-Bahn | The cathedral, the main station and the old town lanes. The obvious first-visit base, one stop across the bridge. | |
| Belgian Quarter | about 20 min | West of the Ring, with the independent shops and the cafes. Quieter than the old town and better fed. | |
| Südstadt | about 20 min | South of the centre along the river, residential and relaxed, with Romanesque churches and small bars. | |
| Ehrenfeld | about 25 min | A former industrial district turned over to street art, music venues and nightlife. The cheapest of these and the furthest out. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Supasalad in Deutz
A plain salad place on Deutzer Freiheit, where a built salad is about seven euros fifty. Light, fast and the right thing the night before.
Around Deutzer Freiheit
The main street on the right bank has ordinary kitchens doing pasta and grilled chicken, ten minutes from the hall and away from the old town crowds.
Cologne food is pork, potato and beer, and the one dish to know has a name that makes no sense until it is explained.
Himmel un Ääd
Heaven and earth: apple sauce and mashed potato under fried blood sausage and onions. Brauhaus Sion in the Altstadt lists it at nine euros.
Lommerzheim in Deutz
A brauhaus on the venue's own side of the river, known for its pork chop and for not having changed in decades. No meal price is published.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Layers for an eleven-degree spread between the 5°C (40°F) dawn and the 16°C (61°F) afternoon.
- A light waterproof for 50mm across about nine days.
- Cash as a backup. Germany still has places that prefer it.
Quick tips
- German shops shut on Sunday. The station supermarkets are the exception.
- Check Entrance East before race morning. It is not the entrance nearest the station.
Deutz has supermarkets along Deutzer Freiheit and in the station. German shops close on Sundays, so buy what you need on Saturday.
The last race in Cologne
Hyrox raced at Koelnmesse in April 2026. No source confirms the hall or the layout from that edition, so there is little local form to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- The race is in Hall 10.1, through Entrance East, and FIBO's own page confirms the assignment.
- Köln Messe/Deutz station is about three minutes from the south entrance.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- FIBO runs on the same four days in the same grounds, so the city will be full.
- Book rooms early. This is the week Cologne hotels price for.
What else is on that weekend
FIBO, which is less an event near your race than the thing your race sits inside.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| FIBO | 8 to 11 April | Koelnmesse, the whole grounds | The same four days as the race, in the same halls. The largest fitness trade show in the world, and the single biggest influence on what this weekend costs. |
| h+h cologne | 2 to 4 April | Koelnmesse | A craft fair in the same grounds, finishing four days before FIBO opens. Rooms will be turning over as you arrive. |
| Nothing at the Lanxess Arena | Race week | Deutz, next to the Messe | The arena's April concerts fall later in the month, so the other big draw at this end of town is quiet. |
| The Rhine promenade | All weekend | Both banks | The riverside path runs past the Messe and over the Hohenzollern bridge to the cathedral. Free, flat and right there. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
Cologne Cathedral
Six hundred years in the building and the tallest twin-spired church anywhere. Free to enter, and 533 steps up the south tower if your legs have anything left.
The Hohenzollern bridge
The rail bridge between Deutz and the cathedral, with a walkway along it and the railings buried under padlocks. The classic view back at the city.
The Romano-Germanic Museum
Roman Cologne, built over the mosaic floor it was found on, beside the cathedral. The city was a provincial capital and the collection shows it.
The chocolate museum
On a spit of land in the Rhine, with a working production line and a chocolate fountain. Sillier than the rest of this list and good with company.
What to do
The Rhine path
A continuous riverside route past the Messe and under the bridges, flat and separated from traffic. The obvious shake-out run from Deutz.
The Rheinpark, next door
A large park immediately north of the Messe with lawns, a cable car over the river and a thermal bath. The closest open ground to the hall.
A brauhaus evening
Kölsch arrives in 200ml glasses and keeps arriving until you put the beer mat on top. The waiters are famously brusque and it is part of the show.
FIBO itself
The trade show your race is inside, filling the rest of the grounds for the same four days. If you are here anyway, the floor is worth a wander.
