Should you race here?
Cheap transport, cheap food and the Adriatic, in a southern Italian city the calendar mostly skips.
Reasons to
- The Pinto stop is four minutes away and a day ticket is EUR 2.50.
- An ordinary meal is about EUR 15, and the focaccia is two euros a slice.
- 40mm of rain across about six days, dry for a European spring.
- Nothing of size is booked in the city across the race days.
Reasons not to
- Hyrox has not named the hall, and the ground has several pavilions.
- No hotel rate was reachable, so the weekend is harder to cost in advance.
- The only published airport transfer is a taxi at EUR 21.
- The venue is out of the centre, so the city is a bus ride each way.
Conditions on the day

Bari has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Nuova Fiera del Levante, your race is in this building
A large exhibition ground on the seafront north-west of the centre, built as the trade fair between Italy and the eastern Mediterranean.
Known for. The Fiera del Levante, the September trade fair that has run since 1930 and gave the site its name.
The building. Founded in 1929 to trade with the Balkans and the Levant, and still the largest fairground in southern Italy.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page a few days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At the Nuova Fiera del Levante, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Bari one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
AMTAB to the Pinto stop, four minutes from the ground. The buses start early enough for the first waves.
What you need to book
Before you book
The listing runs 2 to 4 April, so confirm your division's day before booking the last night.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Brindisi is the other Puglian airport, about ninety minutes south by train.

Getting to Bari
Bari Karol Wojtyła airport is twenty to thirty minutes from the venue by taxi, at a fixed twenty-one euros.
The airport taxi
A fixed twenty-one euros from Bari Karol Wojtyła, taking twenty to thirty minutes. The only published transfer to this address.
AMTAB to Pinto
Four bus lines stop at Pinto, four minutes from the ground, and a day ticket is two euros fifty. The cheapest city transport on this calendar.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
That fixed fare is the only published transfer to this address, so it is the simplest way in with a bag.
Getting to the venue
Bari Vecchia and Murat are the two central districts and both are a short bus ride from the ground. Nothing is far in this city.
The Pinto stop is four minutes from the ground and four AMTAB lines serve it. A day ticket is EUR 2.50 against EUR 1 a journey, so it pays for itself on the third trip, and the whole network is cheap by European standards.
Where to stay
The venue is on the seafront north-west of the centre. Bari Vecchia and Murat are the two districts worth staying in, both a short bus ride away.
Open in Google Maps · Get directions
1. Hotels in Murat
The central shopping district laid out on a grid, with the station, the restaurants and most of the rooms. The default base.
2. Hotels in Bari Vecchia
The walled old town of white stone lanes, with the basilica and the best evening atmosphere in the city.
3. Hotels in Umbertino
Along the front south of the old town, with the promenade and a slower pace. Quieter than Murat and still central.
Nothing of size is booked in Bari across the race days and the film festival starts a week later, so rooms should price as an ordinary early-April weekend.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Bari runs along the Adriatic, with the fairground at the north-western end and the old town in the middle.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Murat | about 15 min by bus | The nineteenth-century grid between the station and the sea, with the shopping streets and most of the hotels. | |
| Bari Vecchia | about 15 min by bus | The medieval town on the headland, a maze of white lanes around the basilica of San Nicola. Where the evenings happen. | |
| Umbertino | about 20 min by bus | The seafront strip south of the old town, with the promenade and a quieter feel. | |
| Madonnella | about 20 min by bus | Residential and near the front, with local markets and ordinary restaurants away from the centre. | |
| Carrassi | about 25 min by bus | Inland and mostly residential, around the university. The cheapest of these and the furthest from the sea. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Panzerotti
Fried dough parcels of tomato and mozzarella, about two euros fifty each from Di Cosimo in Poggiofranco. Light enough the night before if you stop at one.
Murat
The central grid has ordinary trattorias doing plain pasta all evening, fifteen minutes from the ground. More choice than anywhere near the fair.
Puglian food is wheat, vegetables and olive oil, and almost all of it is cheap.
Focaccia barese
A thick olive-oil dough baked with tomatoes and olives pressed into the top, sold by the slice from bakeries. Panificio Fiore in the old town is the one people queue at.
Orecchiette with turnip tops
Ear-shaped pasta with cime di rapa, anchovy and chilli, the dish the whole region is built on. Terranima in Murat does it properly.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Layers for the ten-degree spread between the 9°C (48°F) dawn and the 19°C (66°F) afternoon.
- A light waterproof for 40mm across about six days.
- Cash for the bakeries. The small places in the old town often take nothing else.
Quick tips
- Buy a day ticket at EUR 2.50 instead of singles at EUR 1.
- Shops often shut in the early afternoon. Buy what you need in the morning.
Murat and the streets around the station have supermarkets. Italian shops often close for a few hours in the afternoon, so do not leave it until four.
The last race in Bari
No previous Bari edition could be confirmed from any published source, so there is no local form to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- The Pinto stop for the Fiera is four minutes' walk, on AMTAB lines 02, 22, 27 and 42.
- A day ticket on the city buses is EUR 2.50, against EUR 1 a journey.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- Hyrox has not named the hall. The ground is large, so check before you arrive.
- The airport taxi is a fixed EUR 21, which is the only published transfer.
What else is on that weekend
A quiet weekend, with the city's April programme starting after you leave.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing confirmed on the race days | 2 to 4 April | Across Bari | No concert, festival or fair was confirmed for the race weekend itself. |
| A concert at the Palaflorio | 6 April | Japigia, south of the centre | Two days after the race finishes, so it affects the return rather than the weekend. |
| Bif&st film festival | 10 to 17 April | Teatro Petruzzelli and city venues | The city's big spring event, starting a week after you race. Rooms should be at ordinary rates for the weekend itself. |
| The old town in the evening | All weekend | Bari Vecchia | The lanes fill with people from early evening, and the women making orecchiette on Strada Arco Basso work through the morning. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
The basilica of San Nicola
An eleventh-century Romanesque church built to hold the bones of Saint Nicholas, taken from Turkey by Bari sailors in 1087. Still a pilgrimage site for both churches.
Strada Arco Basso
The lane in the old town where women make orecchiette on tables outside their doors, every morning. Watch, buy a bag, do not photograph without asking.
The Castello Svevo
A Norman castle rebuilt by Frederick II in the 1230s, with a moat and thick walls at the edge of the old town.
Polignano a Mare
A town built on a cliff above the Adriatic, forty minutes south by train, with a beach in a ravine between the rocks. The day trip everyone takes.
What to do
The lungomare
Bari's seafront promenade runs for kilometres past the old town, flat and open to the Adriatic. The obvious shake-out run from anywhere central.
The old harbour
Fishermen sell and clean the catch on the quay beside the old town each morning, raw sea urchins included. Unpolished and worth half an hour.
An evening in Bari Vecchia
The lanes fill after seven and stay full. Small places with four tables, no menus in English and food that has not changed in decades.
Alberobello for the trulli
An hour inland by train, a town of conical drystone houses listed by UNESCO. Touristy and still unlike anywhere else.
