Should you race here?
Two things decide this race. The venue is two minutes from the airport, the easiest arrival on the calendar. It is also forty minutes from Hong Kong, so you choose between sleeping next to the hall and sleeping somewhere with an evening.
Reasons to
- AsiaWorld-Expo is one Airport Express stop from the terminal, about two minutes.
- One hotel connects to the hall by a covered footbridge, so race morning needs no transport at all.
- January is the coolest and driest month here: about 19°C (66°F) by day and 33mm of rain across the month.
- Food is cheap and extremely good. A bowl of wonton noodles runs HK$50 to 100 (USD 6 to 13).
- The city is one of the great ones to spend two days in after you finish.
Reasons not to
- The venue is on the airport island. There is nothing around it but runway and one shopping centre a train stop away.
- Staying in the city costs you about an hour each way on race morning.
- Hotels on the island fill when the hall has an event, and this event fills the hall.
- Air quality is at its worst in winter, when the wind comes off the mainland.
- Mornings start near 15°C (58°F) and an early wave begins before sunrise at 07:03.
Conditions on the day
AIA HYROX Hong Kong runs January 7th, 2027 to January 10th, 2027 at AsiaWorld-Expo. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.

Mild, and the dry end of the year
19°C (66°F) by day, 15°C (58°F) at night
Hong Kong in early January
- January is the coolest month here and one of the driest, with about 33mm of rain across it.
- Humidity still runs near 74%. That is low for Hong Kong and high for anywhere else.
- Sunrise is 07:03 and sunset 18:00, so an early wave starts in the dark.
- Air quality is at its worst in winter, when the wind comes off the mainland. Check the index on the day.

- Nearest station
- AsiaWorld-Expo station, on the Airport Express, at the venue door (0 min)

Hong Kong has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
AsiaWorld-Expo, your race is in this building
An exhibition hall on the airport island, with its own Airport Express station at the door and a covered walkway to a hotel.
Known for. Concerts and trade shows. It is the largest column-free hall in Hong Kong.
The building. AsiaWorld-Expo opened in 2005 on reclaimed land beside Hong Kong International Airport, built so exhibitors could unload freight and fly out without entering the city.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox publishes a provisional schedule early and it is for planning only. Your own start time is linked on the event page about three days before the race. Once a time is assigned it cannot be changed.
What to bring
You check in at the venue in person on the day you race, and you cannot send someone else. Bring photo identification and your registration confirmation. The exact check-in window for this race has not been published, so check the event page before you travel rather than assuming it opens the day before.
You do not bring a timing chip. You collect it at check-in, wear it on an ankle, and hand it back after you finish.
What your wristband does not cover
Your wristband is issued at check-in and admits you on your own race day. It is not a spectator ticket and it does not cover another day. Anyone coming to watch needs to buy their own.
Getting there on the morning
The Airport Express stops at AsiaWorld-Expo station, at the hall, and runs from early morning. From the city allow about 28 minutes from Hong Kong Station or 25 from Kowloon, plus the journey to reach either. Event parking has not been published for this race.
What you need to book
Before you book
Arrive at least one full day before you race. Your start time is confirmed only about three days beforehand and could fall early in the morning. Flying in on race day risks missing your wave.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Hong Kong International is a major hub with direct flights from most of Asia, Europe and Australia, and the venue is one stop from the terminal.
Search flights to Hong KongSomewhere to stay
The closest beds go first, and those are the ones that matter on race morning.
Compare hotels near the venueSomething to do with the rest of the weekend
Most people fly in for one race and see nothing. The day before is dead time if you do not plan it.

Flying out the same evening? This is the difference between a good afternoon and hauling a kit bag around a city.

Getting to Hong Kong
Hong Kong International is one Airport Express stop from the venue, which is about two minutes.
Arriving from abroad
AsiaWorld-Expo is one Airport Express stop from the terminal. No race on the calendar has a shorter transfer. Whether you need a visa depends on your passport, and Hong Kong publishes the list by nationality. Indian passport holders must register online before travelling, even where the visit itself is visa-free.
Entry requirements
Hong Kong sets these by nationality, and the pages below hold the current list. Nothing here replaces checking the one for your passport.
Quick tip
You can land, clear immigration and be at the hall without ever going into the city. Whether that is a good idea depends on whether anyone came with you.
Getting to the venue
The choice here is unusually stark. The hotels on the airport island are minutes from the hall and have nothing around them. The city is forty minutes away and is Hong Kong.
The Airport Express runs a same-day return at HK$85 from Hong Kong Station and HK$78 from Kowloon, but only if you use the same card both ways and spend at least an hour inside AsiaWorld-Expo between taps. On a race day you will.
Where to stay
AsiaWorld-Expo sits on the airport island, so the nearest hotels are airport hotels: close, functional, and surrounded by runway. One of them connects to the hall by a covered footbridge, which on a January morning is worth more than it sounds.
Open in Google Maps · Get directions
1. Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel
Connected to the hall by a covered bridge, so you reach your wave without going outside. The shortest journey to a start line of any hotel on the calendar.
2. Regal Airport Hotel
Joined to Terminal 1 by a covered walkway, and one stop from the venue. A full-service airport hotel: unremarkable and extremely convenient.
3. Novotel Citygate Hong Kong
Sits in Citygate Outlets above Tung Chung MTR, so there are shops, a food court and a pool. The nearest thing to an evening without going into the city.
The airport hotels fill when the hall has an event, and this one fills it. Book before the wave schedule appears, not after.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
If you are bringing someone who is not racing, or you want an evening, the airport island is the wrong place to sleep.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central and Sheung Wan | about 28 min by Airport Express | The business and dining core, with Sheung Wan adding older streets, galleries and small shops. | A partner who is not racing |
| Tsim Sha Tsui | about 25 min from Kowloon Station | The Kowloon waterfront, with the harbour view back at the island, museums and a dense run of hotels. | A first visit to the city |
| Tung Chung | about 18 min from Tsing Yi | Quieter and cheaper, by the Citygate shops and the cable car up to the Big Buddha. | A compromise between the hall and the city |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Food Opera, Citygate Outlets
A food court above Tung Chung station with the usual range of plain Asian cooking: rice plates, noodle soups, nothing rich. It is the closest ordinary food to the venue. Note that it is not walkable from the hall, so plan the train or a taxi.
Those are the safe choices near the venue. What follows is what people come to Hong Kong for, and all of it is in the city rather than near the hall.
Mak's Noodle, Central
A famously small bowl of wonton noodles, in a shop that has been serving them for decades. The portion is the point of the joke and the quality is not. Light enough that it is one of the few local classics you could eat the night before.
Yung Kee, Central
Roast goose is the dish Hong Kong is best known for, and among the richest things you can eat. Fat, salty and very good. Keep it for after you finish.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Everything you race in, because the airport island sells none of it
- A warm layer for the morning, which starts near 15°C (58°F)
- Gels and electrolytes, more than you think
- An Octopus card, or a contactless bank card, which the MTR now takes
- Photo identification for check-in
- A UK-style three-pin plug adapter
Quick tips
- The venue is on the airport island and sells nothing you race with. Buy what you need in the city or bring it.
- The Airport Express same-day return is cheaper than two singles, but only if you tap with the same card both ways and stay inside the venue for an hour.
- January mornings start near 15°C (58°F) and the hall is air-conditioned, so you will want a layer you are happy to hand in at bag drop.
The last race in Hong Kong
The most recent weekend at the building you will race in.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- Hong Kong has grown faster than almost any race on the calendar. It began as a small event in 2022 and is now one of the largest in Asia.
- It has also moved around the year, from November in 2024 to July in 2025 and May in 2026.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- January is the coolest and driest part of the Hong Kong year. It is a different race from the summer editions.
- Each edition has been bigger than the last, so expect longer queues at check-in than a report from an earlier year describes.
- The World Championships come to the same hall in June 2027, so the venue will be busy with Hyrox twice that year.
What else is on that weekend
Checked against your race dates, not the month.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyrox Youngstars Hong Kong | 9 and 10 January | AsiaWorld-Expo | The junior race, in the same hall across your weekend. Expect the venue and the trains to be busier on those two days. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
The Peak Tram and Victoria Peak
A funicular railway up the hill behind Central, and the view of the harbour that every photograph of Hong Kong is taken from. It is busy and it is worth it. Go in the late afternoon and stay for the lights.
The Star Ferry
A ten minute crossing between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui that has run since 1888, on boats that have not changed much. It costs less than a coffee and is the best view in the city from water level.
What to do
The Ngong Ping cable car and the Big Buddha
A cable car from Tung Chung over the hills of Lantau to a very large seated Buddha. It is close to the venue, which almost nothing else is, so it works as the thing you do on an empty afternoon before the race.
