Should you race here?
The only warm race of the month, in a city that is worth the trip whatever your time is.
Reasons to
- November is spring here: 27.9°C (82°F) by day against 7.1°C (45°F) in Poznan the same week.
- Thirteen hours of daylight, so there is a real day either side of your wave.
- The BRT stops at the venue and costs BRL 5, and a bed near it is about BRL 428.
- Rio is one of the few race cities where the trip would be worth making without the race.
Reasons not to
- Riocentro is twenty-five kilometres from the beaches, so you choose between the race and the city.
- Humidity near 79% changes how the race feels, and a weekend is not enough to adapt.
- Pride fills Copacabana on the Sunday and two arena concerts fill Barra on the Saturday.
Conditions on the day
HYROX Rio de Janeiro runs November 21st, 2026 to November 22nd, 2026 at Riocentro. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.
The catch
Spring here, not autumn
28°C (82°F) by day, 22°C (71°F) at night
Rio de Janeiro in late November
- November is spring in the southern hemisphere, so this is the only warm race of the month.
- The average day reaches 27.9°C (82°F) and the night only falls to 21.8°C (71°F).
- Humidity sits near 79%, which is what makes the heat work on you rather than the temperature.
- Daylight runs 05:00 to 18:18, more than thirteen hours, against under nine in Poznan the same week.

- Dark

Rio de Janeiro has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Riocentro, your race is in this building
The largest convention centre in Latin America, out in Barra da Tijuca, well west of the Rio most people picture.
Known for. Rock in Rio has been staged on this site, and it held events at the 2016 Olympics.
The building. Opened in 1977 on reclaimed flatland between the lagoons, and extended since. It is a complex of pavilions rather than a single hall.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At Riocentro, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Rio one admits you to, and check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
The BRT Transoeste line stops at Riocentro and runs in its own lane, so it is not affected by the traffic around Barra.
What you need to book
Before you book
Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Santos Dumont is the second airport and handles domestic routes from the centre.

Most people fly in for one race and see nothing. The day before is dead time if you do not plan it.

Getting to Rio de Janeiro
Galeao International is about 26 minutes from Riocentro by taxi.
A taxi from the airport, not the bus
Galeao to Riocentro is about 26 minutes by cab for BRL 95 to 120. The bus route needs a change and takes nearly two hours.
The BRT is named after the venue
Riocentro has its own stop on the Transoeste bus rapid transit line, which runs in its own lane and so beats the traffic. A single is BRL 5.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
The bus from the airport takes nearly two hours and needs a change. A taxi is BRL 95 to 120.
Getting to the venue
Barra da Tijuca is near the venue and is a suburb of malls and towers. Copacabana and Ipanema are the Rio you came for, half an hour away.
The BRT station is named after the venue and stops at it, which is the easy part. The hard part is that Riocentro is in Barra da Tijuca, well west of the beaches, so wherever you stay you are committing to a journey.
Where to stay
Barra da Tijuca is the practical choice and the dull one. Copacabana and Ipanema are why people come to Rio, and are about half an hour from the start line.

1. Hotels in Barra da Tijuca
Towers, malls and wide roads, about BRL 428 a night. Closest to the race and furthest from the city.
2. Hotels in Ipanema
The best eating and the calmer of the two famous beaches. A real journey to the venue, and worth it.
3. Hotels in Copacabana
The widest choice of rooms at the widest range of prices. Pride fills it on the Sunday.
Pride is on Copacabana on 22 November, so beachfront rooms will be tight and expensive that night. Barra is unaffected.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Riocentro is twenty-five kilometres from the beaches. Either you stay near the race or you stay in Rio, and most people should choose Rio.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barra da Tijuca | 10 to 20 min by road | Built for cars in the 1970s: malls, towers and a very long beach. Convenient and characterless. | |
| Ipanema | about 38 min by bus | The beach from the song, with the best restaurants in the city and a calmer crowd than Copacabana. | |
| Copacabana | about 29 min by taxi | Four kilometres of sand and the densest supply of hotel rooms in Brazil. Busy, cheap and famous. | |
| Botafogo | about 40 min by road | Where people who live here go out. Good bars, no beach, and Sugarloaf at the end of the street. | |
| Santa Teresa | about 45 min by road | Cobbled streets on a hillside above the centre, with galleries and colonial houses. Beautiful and inconvenient. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
A por quilo buffet
Self-service restaurants charging by weight, everywhere in Brazil and open at lunch. You take exactly what you want, which the night before a race is the whole point.
Barra da Tijuca, near the venue
The malls around Riocentro have food courts and ordinary restaurants that serve early. Not exciting, and ten minutes from your bed.
Brazil feeds you meat and beans in quantity, and both are the wrong idea the night before a race.
Feijoada at Casa da Feijoada
Black bean stew with pork, served with rice, orange and toasted cassava. Traditionally eaten at Saturday lunch and heavy enough that nothing follows it.
Churrasco at Churrascaria Palace
Rodizio service: waiters bring cuts of grilled meat to the table until you turn the card to red. A spectacle, and an enormous amount of protein.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Electrolytes, and more than you would take to a cold race. It is 27.9°C (82°F) with 79% humidity.
- Light clothing for outside and something for air conditioning inside, which is aggressive here.
- Sun protection. Thirteen hours of daylight and a spring sun ten degrees from the tropics.
Quick tips
- Drink from the day you land rather than the morning you race. The humidity takes more out of you than the heat does.
- Card is accepted almost everywhere, but keep small notes for beach kiosks and buses.
Barra is full of malls, so pharmacies and supermarkets are easy. Anything specialised is easier in Ipanema.
The last race in Rio de Janeiro
Hyrox has not raced at Riocentro before, so there is no previous weekend here to describe.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- This is the first Hyrox at Riocentro, so nobody has a lap of it to pass on.
- The centre is a set of separate pavilions, so check which one your race is in before you arrive.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- No report from a previous year describes this building, because there has not been one.
- Every other race this month is a cold-weather race. This one is not, and it needs a different week of preparation.
What else is on that weekend
Two of these fill the city on your race days.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| The 31st Rio Pride parade | 22 November | Copacabana seafront | Hundreds of thousands on the beachfront on the Sunday. Copacabana hotels fill and the roads along the sand close. |
| Mariah Carey | 21 November | Farmasi Arena, Barra da Tijuca | In Barra, the same district as Riocentro, on the Saturday night. Expect traffic around the venue to be worse after dark. |
| Dino Fonseca | 21 November | Qualistage, Barra da Tijuca | Also in Barra and also Saturday evening, adding to the same roads. |
| The Premio PIPA exhibition | Through 22 November | Paco Imperial, Centro | A contemporary art prize show in the old centre. Quiet, indoors and free of the crowds. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
Sugarloaf Mountain
Two cable cars take you up a granite peak at the mouth of the bay, and the second stage is the view everyone has seen. Go late and watch the city light up.
The Museu do Amanha
Calatrava's museum of tomorrow on the regenerated waterfront, about climate and what comes next. The building is worth the visit on its own.
The Jardim Botanico
Two hundred years old, with an avenue of royal palms planted by the emperor and monkeys in the trees. Flat, shaded and the coolest hour you will spend outdoors.
Parque Lage
A mansion with a courtyard pool at the foot of Corcovado, free to walk into, with the statue framed above the arches. The most photographed free thing in Rio.
What to do
Walk the Ipanema sand at dawn
The beach belongs to the city before eight: swimmers, runners and footballers rather than tourists. Free, flat and the best hour of the day in the heat.
The Sunday Hippie Fair
A craft market that has filled Praca General Osorio in Ipanema every Sunday since 1968. Good for presents and better for the food stalls round the edge.
The Selaron Steps
Two hundred and fifteen steps covered in tiles sent from every country, the life's work of one Chilean artist. Ten minutes and a short walk from Lapa.
Swim, carefully
The Atlantic here has a real undertow and the flags are not decorative. Swim between them, near a lifeguard post, and not the morning you race.
