Should you race here?

A convention centre inside the city rather than outside it, at the driest end of the Cape year.

Reasons to

  • The venue is in the city centre, walkable from most central hotels.
  • Only 20mm of rain across March, on about five days.
  • An ordinary meal is about R200, which is cheap for a long-haul destination.
  • Table Mountain, two oceans and the peninsula are all within an hour.

Reasons not to

  • The MyCiTi airport bus is reported suspended, so the airport means a car.
  • No hotel rate in rand was reachable, so the weekend is harder to cost.
  • It is a long flight for most of this calendar's athletes.
  • The south-easter can blow hard for days at a time in late summer.
The one to take seriously. Sort the airport leg before you land. The MyCiTi airport service is reported as suspended, which leaves a car at about R194 and twenty-eight minutes, and that is worth arranging rather than discovering at arrivals. Everything after that is easy: the venue is inside the city, most central hotels are a walk, and March is the driest month this calendar has.

Conditions on the day

Virgin Active HYROX Cape Town || runs March 26th, 2027 to March 28th, 2027 at Cape Town International Convention Centre. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.

Cape Town in late March

  • The March average reaches 25°C (78°F) by day and falls to 14°C (58°F) at night.
  • Only 20mm of rain falls across about five days, which is dry by any standard but not the driest here.
  • Humidity sits at 74%, which the south-easter takes the edge off.
  • Daylight runs 06:54 to 18:50, just under twelve hours.

Cape Town has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.

Cape Town International Convention Centre, your race is in this building

A convention centre at the foot of the city centre, between the business district and the harbour, with Table Mountain behind it.

Known for. Conferences and trade shows, and for being the one large indoor venue inside Cape Town's centre rather than out of town.

The building. Opened in 2003 on reclaimed land at the harbour edge, and doubled in size with a second building in 2017.

Race day and start times

The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.

Hyrox links individual start times on the event page a few days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.

What that means for booking. The listing runs 26 to 28 March, so confirm your division's day before booking the last night.

What to bring

At the CTICC, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.

You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.

What your wristband does not cover

You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Cape Town one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.

Getting there on the morning

A walk from most central hotels. The MyCiTi buses stop at Convention Square, three minutes from the door.

What you need to book

Before you book

The listing runs 26 to 28 March, so confirm your division's day before booking the last night.

If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.

Flying into the city

Johannesburg is two hours by air and takes most of the connecting traffic from elsewhere in Africa.

Something to do with the rest of the weekend

Most people fly in for one race and see nothing. The day before is dead time if you do not plan it.

Getting to Cape Town

Cape Town International is about twenty-eight minutes from the centre by car, at around R194 by rideshare.

  • about 28 min

Walking from the centre

The venue sits at the bottom of the city, so most central hotels are ten to twenty minutes on foot. No fare and no timetable.

  • Free

Entry requirements

South Africa allows visa-free entry for many nationalities for short stays. Check the current rules for your passport before you book.
Bring your passport to check-in. Hyrox has not published which documents Cape Town accepts.

Quick tip

Book the car rather than planning on the airport bus, which is reported as suspended.

Getting to the venue

The City Bowl and De Waterkant are both walkable to the venue. The V&A Waterfront is a short hop and has the view.

Neighbourhoods worth the commute

Cape Town's centre sits in a bowl between Table Mountain and the harbour, and the venue is at the harbour end of it.

AreaTo the venueWhySuits
City Bowl 10 to 20 min on foot The central streets under the mountain, with the gardens, the museums and Long Street. Walkable to the venue.
De Waterkant about 15 min on foot A small grid of cobbled lanes and painted cottages just west of the centre, with wine bars and quiet.
V&A Waterfront about 20 min on foot The harbour development, with the aquarium, the boats to Robben Island and the best view of the mountain.
Green Point about 20 min Flat and residential between the harbour and the sea, with the stadium and the promenade.
Sea Point about 25 min The ocean-facing strip with a long promenade and tidal pools. Further out, and the best running in the city.

Eating before and after

The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.

The City Bowl

Bree and Long Street have ordinary kitchens doing pasta and grilled chicken, ten to twenty minutes on foot. No source names one near the venue with a price.

  • About R200
  • City Bowl, 15 min from the venue
  • eat by seven

The V&A Waterfront

Twenty minutes on foot, with a food market and plenty of plain options. Busier and slightly dearer than the centre, and reliably open.

  • About R250
  • V&A Waterfront, 20 min from the venue
  • order something plain

Cape cooking is Malay spice and Atlantic fish, and both are cheap by the standards of this calendar.

Cape Malay at Biesmiellah

Bobotie and denningvleis in the Bo-Kaap, the spiced slow-cooked dishes brought by enslaved people from the Indies and now the city's own food.

  • R130 to 200 a main
  • Bo-Kaap, 15 min from the venue
  • order the bobotie after you race

Fish at Kalky's

A shed on the harbour wall at Kalk Bay serving hake and chips on paper plates, with the boats unloading beside you. Worth the drive south.

  • R100 to 180 a head
  • Kalk Bay, 40 min from the venue
  • order the hake, grilled

Race day supplies

The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.

Pack list

  • Sun protection. Late March is 25°C (78°F) with hard light and little cloud.
  • A windproof layer. The south-easter blows hard off the mountain even on warm days.
  • Little waterproofing. Only 20mm falls across the whole month.

Quick tips

  • Arrange the airport car before you land. The MyCiTi airport bus is reported suspended.
  • The venue is walkable from most central hotels, so a day ticket may not be needed.

The centre has supermarkets within a few minutes and the Waterfront has more. South African shops keep long hours including Sundays.

The last race in Cape Town

Hyrox raced in Cape Town in April 2026. No source confirms the hall or the layout from that edition, so there is little local form to pass on.

What happened

The last edition, in short.

  • The Convention Square stop is three minutes' walk, on the MyCiTi buses.
  • The venue is in the city centre, so most central hotels are walkable.

What it means for you

How your race differs from that one.

  • The MyCiTi airport bus is reported as suspended, so the airport means a car.
  • Late March is the driest end of the Cape summer: 20mm across the month.

What else is on that weekend

A busy March in the city, though the big dates fall either side of the race.

WhatWhenWhereWhat it means

What to see

Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.

Table Mountain

A flat-topped sandstone block a kilometre above the city, reachable by cableway or on foot up Platteklip Gorge. The gorge is two hours of steps and no shade.

  • City Bowl, 20 min from the venue
  • half a day

The Bo-Kaap

Steep cobbled streets of brightly painted houses on the slope above the centre, settled by freed slaves and still the Cape Malay quarter.

  • Free to walk
  • Bo-Kaap, 15 min from the venue
  • allow an hour

Robben Island

The prison island in Table Bay where Mandela spent eighteen years, reached by ferry from the Waterfront and guided by former prisoners.

  • V&A Waterfront, 20 min from the venue
  • half a day

Kirstenbosch

A botanical garden on the mountain's eastern slopes, with a walkway through the canopy and only Cape plants. One of the great gardens anywhere.

  • Southern suburbs, 30 min from the venue

What to do

The Sea Point promenade

Three kilometres of flat paved path along the Atlantic, busy from dawn and open to the wind. The best shake-out run on this calendar.

  • Free
  • Sea Point, 25 min from the venue
  • an hour

Signal Hill at sunset

The ridge above the city with a road to the top and the whole bay below. Fifteen minutes by car and the thing to do on an arrival evening.

  • Free
  • above the city, 20 min from the venue
  • an hour

The Company's Garden

The vegetable garden the Dutch planted in 1652 to supply passing ships, now a park of oaks and squirrels in the middle of town.

  • Free
  • City Bowl, 15 min from the venue
  • an hour

The Cape peninsula by car

Chapman's Peak, Boulders Beach and the Cape Point reserve in one loop. A full day and the reason to add one onto the trip.
