Should you race here?
High summer and nearly fourteen hours of daylight, on the far side of the world.
Reasons to
- 24.0°C (75°F) and the driest month of the Auckland year, while Europe races in the dark.
- Almost fourteen hours of daylight, from 06:42 to 20:28.
- Rangitoto, Waiheke and Piha are all within an hour, and February is the month for them.
- Rooms near the venue start around NZD 110, which is about USD 65.
Reasons not to
- It is the furthest race on this calendar from almost everywhere.
- Waitangi weekend is a three-day holiday, so the city is busy and the rooms are dearer.
- The showgrounds are in a residential suburb and Greenlane station is a 21-minute walk.
Conditions on the day
BYD HYROX Auckland runs February 4th, 2027 to February 7th, 2027 at Auckland Showgrounds. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.
The catch
High summer, on a long weekend
24°C (75°F) by day, 16°C (61°F) at night
Auckland in early February
- The February average reaches 24.0°C (75°F) by day and falls to 16.3°C (61°F) at night.
- Humidity sits at 80%, so a 24°C (75°F) Auckland afternoon works harder on you than the number says.
- February is the driest month here, with 68mm across eight days.
- Daylight runs 06:42 to 20:28, nearly fourteen hours of it.

Auckland has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Auckland Showgrounds, your race is in this building
A showground at Epsom beside Alexandra Park racecourse, four kilometres south of the city centre and a 21-minute walk from Greenlane station.
Known for. The Auckland Easter Show, the home show, and most of the large consumer exhibitions in the North Island.
The building. Laid out as the agricultural showgrounds for Auckland and used for exhibitions since, next to the harness racing track.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At the showgrounds, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Auckland one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
A bus down Manukau Road, which beats the train and its 21-minute walk. Saturday is a public holiday, so check the timetable.
What you need to book
Before you book
Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Almost everyone arrives through here, because Christchurch and Wellington take only a handful of international routes.

Most people fly in for one race and see nothing. The day before is dead time if you do not plan it.

Flying out the same evening? This is the difference between a good afternoon and hauling a kit bag around a city.

Getting to Auckland
Auckland airport is about 27 minutes from the showgrounds by rideshare, for roughly NZD 52.
Rideshare from the airport
About 27 minutes and roughly NZD 52, and how most people will arrive. There is no direct train from the terminal.
AirportLink and the train
A bus to Puhinui and then a train to Greenlane, with a 21-minute walk at the end. Cheaper, slower and awkward with a bag.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
There is no direct train from the airport. The AirportLink bus to Puhinui and then a train is the public option, with a walk at the end.
Getting to the venue
Epsom and Greenlane are the nearest and are residential. The CBD is 20 to 35 minutes by bus and Ponsonby and Parnell are the better evenings.
Greenlane station is the rail option but it is a 21-minute walk at the far end, so the buses down Manukau Road are usually quicker door to door. Contactless fares cap at NZD 20 a day across the whole network.
Where to stay
The showgrounds are in Epsom, a residential suburb four kilometres south of the centre. The CBD is 20 to 35 minutes by bus and has everything.
Open in Google Maps · Get directions
1. Hotels in Epsom and Greenlane
A handful of motels and a hotel from about NZD 110 a night. Closest to the start and quiet in the evening.
2. Hotels in Newmarket
The shopping district, on the train line, ten minutes from the venue. The best compromise here.
3. Hotels in the CBD and Ponsonby
The harbour, the Sky Tower and the restaurants of Ponsonby Road. Furthest out and the best evening.
Waitangi weekend is a three-day holiday and follows Auckland Anniversary by a week, so the whole fortnight is busy. Book as early as you can.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Auckland sprawls, and the showgrounds sit in the inner south. Everything below is measured by bus or train from Epsom.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epsom and Greenlane | 5 to 20 min on foot | Villa streets and school zones around the showground. Convenient, green and without an evening in it. | |
| Newmarket | about 10 min by bus | The shopping district, with a rail station and plenty of places to eat. The practical middle ground. | |
| Parnell | about 15 min by bus | The oldest suburb, leafy and smart, with galleries, the museum and the Domain at the top of it. | |
| The CBD | 20 to 35 min by bus | The harbour, the Sky Tower and the ferries. Where the ferries to the islands leave from. | |
| Ponsonby | about 30 min by bus | A ridge of restored villas west of the centre with the best eating and drinking in the city along one road. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Newmarket
Ten minutes by bus, with restaurants that serve from six and no reason to linger. Exactly the right kind of unremarkable.
Dominion Road, for the plain end
Noodle and rice shops a few minutes from the showgrounds, most under twenty dollars and open early. The nearest useful food to the hall.
Auckland eats Pacific, Asian and antipodean, and the coffee is as good as Melbourne's whatever Melbourne says.
Ponsonby Road
A kilometre of restaurants along a villa-lined ridge, from a food hall in an old masonic hall to proper dining rooms. About NZD 25 a plate.
Dominion Road
Five kilometres of Chinese, Malaysian and Vietnamese kitchens running south from the city, crossing a few minutes from the showgrounds. The cheapest good food here.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Sun protection, seriously. New Zealand's UV is among the fiercest anywhere and February is its peak.
- Electrolytes. It is 24.0°C (75°F) at 80% humidity, which is more than it sounds.
- Swimming things. The beaches are on bus routes and the sea is warm in February.
Quick tips
- Tap a contactless card rather than buying tickets. Fares cap at NZD 20 a day.
- Check the Monday timetables before you book a departure. It is a public holiday.
Greenlane and Newmarket both have supermarkets within ten minutes. Note that the Monday is a public holiday and many shops shut.
The last race in Auckland
Auckland Showgrounds is a recent addition to the Hyrox calendar, so there is little previous form here to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- Greenlane station is a 21-minute walk, so the bus down Manukau Road is usually the better call.
- Alexandra Park next door has parking at NZD 10 a day.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- Waitangi Day falls on the Saturday, which makes this a three-day public holiday weekend.
- Transport runs to a holiday timetable on the Monday, so check before booking a late flight.
What else is on that weekend
A public holiday weekend, and that is the thing shaping this one.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waitangi Day | 6 February | Nationwide, with events at Okahu Bay and across the city | A public holiday on the Saturday itself, observed on the Monday. The country travels, and accommodation prices follow. |
| The Monday observance | 8 February | Everywhere | Buses and trains run to a holiday timetable and many shops shut. Check before booking a Monday flight. |
| Breakers against the Tasmania JackJumpers | 7 February | Spark Arena, in the city | Sunday evening basketball in the centre, twenty minutes from the venue. Something to do after a morning wave. |
| Auckland Anniversary, the week before | 1 February | The whole region | The second long weekend in eight days. Domestic travel is heavy across the whole fortnight. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
Auckland Museum
A war memorial on the hill in the Domain holding the best Maori and Pacific collections anywhere, including a 25-metre war canoe. NZD 32 for overseas visitors.
Rangitoto
A volcanic island that rose out of the harbour six hundred years ago, 25 minutes by ferry, with a lava-field walk to a summit and the whole city behind you.
Auckland Art Gallery
The main collection is free, and the building joins a nineteenth-century French-chateau frontage to a kauri-timber canopy that won the world architecture prize.
One Tree Hill and Cornwall Park
A volcanic cone with sheep on it, twenty minutes' walk from the showgrounds, with terraces cut by Maori gardeners six centuries ago still visible on the slopes.
What to do
Swim at Mission Bay or Piha
Mission Bay is calm, close and on a bus route. Piha is forty minutes west, black sand and serious surf, and the one worth the drive.
Waiheke island
Forty minutes by ferry to vineyards, olive groves and beaches. February is the best month for it and the ferries run all day.
The Coast to Coast walkway
Sixteen kilometres across the isthmus from the Waitemata to the Manukau, over three volcanoes, passing a few minutes from the showgrounds.
Mount Eden
The highest volcano in the city, ten minutes from the venue, with a crater fifty metres deep and a 360-degree view from the rim. It is free, and twenty minutes up.
