Should you race here?
The only open-air race in this guide, on a lagoon in the Caribbean dry season.
Reasons to
- Rooms near the venue from about USD 48 and an ordinary meal MXN 201.
- 29.3°C (85°F) and 43mm of rain across the month, in Cancun's best season.
- Isla Mujeres is twenty minutes by ferry and Chichen Itza two and a half hours west.
- A 24-minute rideshare from one of the best-connected airports in the Americas.
Reasons not to
- There is no roof, so the sun, the heat and the humidity are all part of the race.
- February is peak season, so flights and rooms are at their dearest.
- The hotel strip is 22km long and has no city in it, so the real Cancun is a bus ride away.
Conditions on the day

Cancun has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Malecon Tajamar, your race is in this building
An open-air waterfront promenade on the Nichupte lagoon between downtown Cancun and the hotel strip, with boardwalks and mangrove on three sides.
Known for. Being a public lagoon-side park rather than an exhibition hall, and for the sunsets over the water behind it.
The building. Laid out as a public malecon on reclaimed lagoon frontage, and used for the city's outdoor events since.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At the malecon, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Cancun one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
A bus along Avenida Tulum, or a short rideshare. Both are quick, and the morning is the cool part of the day.
What you need to book
Before you book
Here the hour matters more than anywhere else in this guide, because the race is outdoors. A midday wave is a different event from an early one.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Tulum opened a second airport in 2023, about two hours south, which takes some long-haul traffic.

Getting to Cancun
Cancun International is about 24 minutes from Tajamar by rideshare, for around MXN 332.
Rideshare from the airport
Twenty-four minutes and about three hundred and thirty pesos, which is under twenty dollars. Book it in the app rather than at the kerb.
The ADO coach
Official coaches run from outside arrivals to the downtown bus station, and a local bus or short taxi finishes the trip. Cheaper and slower.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
Ignore the touts inside the terminal. Walk out and use an app, or buy an ADO coach ticket at the official counter.
Getting to the venue
Tajamar sits between downtown and the hotel strip, so both are close. Downtown is cheaper and more of a city; the Zona Hotelera is the beach.
Six bus routes run along Avenida Tulum two minutes from the site, and a single fare is thirteen pesos. From the airport a rideshare is 24 minutes and about three hundred and thirty pesos, which is under twenty dollars.
Where to stay
Tajamar sits between the two halves of Cancun. Downtown is the city and the Zona Hotelera is the beach, and both are minutes away.

1. Hotels at Puerto Cancun and Tajamar
Newer blocks by the marina, from about USD 48 a night. Closest to the start and quiet.
2. Hotels in downtown Cancun
The real city, with markets and the best cheap food, averaging about USD 66 a night.
3. Hotels in the Zona Hotelera
Resorts along 22km of beach. The strip is long, so check which kilometre your hotel is at.
February is the peak of the Cancun season and the carnival follows the race by three days. Book earlier than the prices suggest you need to.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Cancun is a downtown on the mainland and a 22km sandbar of resorts, with the lagoon between them. Tajamar is on the join.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puerto Cancun | 5 to 15 min on foot | A marina district next to the malecon, newer and quieter, with the golf course and the mall. | |
| Downtown, El Centro | 20 to 30 min by bus | Where Cancun actually lives: markets, taquerias and the Yucatecan food worth travelling for. | |
| The Zona Hotelera | 15 to 40 min by bus | Twenty-two kilometres of beach and resorts on a sandbar. Beautiful water, and no city in it. | |
| Puerto Juarez | about 15 min by road | North of downtown, where the Isla Mujeres ferries leave from every half hour. | |
| Central Cancun | 20 to 30 min by bus | The supermanzanas around Avenida Tulum, ordinary residential blocks with the cheapest eating in the city. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Peter's, by the malecon
A plain sit-down restaurant about six hundred metres from the site, which makes it the closest option to the start line.
Puerto Cancun
The marina district next door has a mall and a row of restaurants, all of them serving from six. Unremarkable and close.
Yucatecan food is its own cuisine, built on achiote, sour orange and slow-cooked pork, and almost none of it is on the hotel strip.
Cochinita pibil downtown
Pork marinated in achiote and sour orange, wrapped in banana leaf and cooked underground overnight. Lonchería El Pocito in the supermanzanas does the honest version.
La Habichuela
A downtown garden restaurant that has been doing Yucatecan and Caribbean cooking since 1977, and is the sit-down version of the same food.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Sunscreen, a cap and more of both than you think. This is the only race in this guide with no roof over it.
- Far more electrolytes than a European race. 29.3°C (85°F) at 77% humidity, in direct sun.
- Swimming things. The Caribbean is 26°C (79°F) in February and the beach is free.
Quick tips
- Agree the fare or use an app before getting into any taxi. Cancun taxis do not run meters.
- Drink bottled water. It is cheap everywhere and the tap is not for visitors.
Puerto Cancun has a mall with a supermarket and a pharmacy ten minutes away. Downtown has everything for less.
The last race in Cancun
Hyrox has raced at Malecon Tajamar once before, in the 2026 season, so there is one previous weekend rather than a long record.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- This is the second running here, so the layout is established but there is little published form to go on.
- The site is an open-air malecon, not a hall, which is unlike every other race in this guide.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- There is no roof. Sun, wind and humidity all land on the race floor rather than outside it.
- 29.3°C (85°F) at 77% humidity is a hard combination, and the sun here in February is strong.
What else is on that weekend
A quiet weekend in high season, with the carnival three days behind it.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancun carnival | From 24 February | Downtown and along Avenida Tulum | Starts three days after racing ends. Parades, Caribbean music and free concerts, and the reason to stay on if you can. |
| The peak of the dry season | 19 to 21 February | The whole city | Mid-February is the busiest fortnight of the Cancun year. Flights and rooms are at their highest and the weather is at its best. |
| The Isla Mujeres ferry | Every half hour, all weekend | Puerto Juarez, 15 minutes north | A twenty-minute crossing to clear water and no cars. The easiest good thing to do with a spare afternoon. |
| Nothing at the malecon itself | 19 to 21 February | Malecon Tajamar | The site is a public promenade and nothing else is booked into it, so the race has the lagoon front to itself. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
Chichen Itza
Two and a half hours west, the Maya city with the great stepped pyramid at its centre. Go at opening, because by eleven it is both hot and full.
Isla Mujeres
A twenty-minute ferry from Puerto Juarez to an island with clear water at both ends and golf carts instead of cars. The easiest good day out here.
The cenotes
Limestone sinkholes filled with fresh water, which the Maya treated as entrances to the underworld and which are now the best swim on the peninsula.
Museo Maya de Cancun
The regional Maya museum on the hotel strip, with the San Miguelito ruins in the grounds behind it. Air-conditioned, which in this climate is part of the appeal.
What to do
Swim at Playa Delfines
The big public beach at the far end of the hotel strip, free, with the open Caribbean in front of it. The water is 26°C (79°F) in February.
Snorkel the reef
The Mesoamerican reef starts just off the coast and runs south. Boats leave from Puerto Juarez and the Zona Hotelera all morning.
The malecon itself
A flat boardwalk along the lagoon with mangrove on one side, and the venue on it. Free, and the obvious place to shake the flight out.
Mercado 28
The downtown market, where the food court at the back is where people who live here eat. Twenty minutes by bus and a fraction of the strip's prices.
