Should you race here?
A cheap, central race under a Victorian train shed, with the whole city on foot.
Reasons to
- Rooms near the venue from about GBP 62 a night, which is cheap for a city-centre European race.
- Manchester Central is in the middle of town and almost every hotel is a walk away.
- The museums are free: science and industry, the city art gallery and the university museum.
- The Curry Mile is twenty minutes away and is the best South Asian eating in Britain.
Reasons not to
- It is cold, wet and grey, and 62mm of January rain is a conservative description.
- Eight and a half hours of daylight, with the light going by half past four.
- Co-op Live has three events across race week, so central rooms are tighter than usual.
Conditions on the day
HYROX Manchester runs January 20th, 2027 to January 31st, 2027 at Manchester Central. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.
The catch
Cold, wet and grey
7°C (45°F) by day, 2°C (36°F) at night
Manchester in late January
- The January average reaches 7°C (45°F) by day and falls to 2°C (36°F) at night.
- About 62mm of rain falls across the month, and Manchester has its reputation for a reason.
- Humidity holds at 85%, which is what makes a damp northern winter feel sharper than the number.
- Daylight runs 08:08 to 16:34, so the light is going by half past four.

Manchester has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Manchester Central, your race is in this building
A Victorian railway terminus turned exhibition hall, with its single arched roof still over the floor, a few minutes from St Peter's Square.
Known for. Party conferences, the Great British Beer Festival, and a train shed roof that was the second largest in the world when it was built.
The building. Built in 1880 as Manchester Central station, closed to trains in 1969, and converted into an exhibition centre in 1986.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At Manchester Central, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Manchester one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
On foot from almost anywhere central, or one tram to St Peter's Square. It will be dark and probably wet.
What you need to book
Before you book
Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Liverpool John Lennon is 50 minutes away by road and takes low-cost European routes.

Getting to Manchester
Manchester airport is twenty minutes from Piccadilly by train, then a twenty-minute walk to the venue.
The train from the airport
Twenty minutes to Piccadilly from under the terminals, then twenty minutes on foot or two tram stops. The quickest route in.
The Metrolink, if you prefer
The tram runs from the airport to St Peter's Square for GBP 4.60, but it takes 52 minutes. Cheaper, slower, and it stops at the door.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
The Metrolink from the airport goes to St Peter's Square but takes 52 minutes. The train is quicker even with the walk.
Getting to the venue
Everything central is a walk. Deansgate and Spinningfields are the closest, the Northern Quarter is fifteen minutes and has the better evening.
The venue is in the middle of Manchester, so the tram, the trains and most of the hotels are all within a few minutes on foot. From the airport the train to Piccadilly is twenty minutes and then a twenty-minute walk, which beats the tram by half an hour.
Where to stay
Manchester Central is in the middle of the city, so the question is not how far but which part. Everything below is a walk.
Open in Google Maps · Get directions
1. Hotels on Deansgate and Spinningfields
The closest, from about GBP 62 a night, with the bars and restaurants of Spinningfields next door.
2. Hotels in the Northern Quarter
Independent bars, record shops and the best breakfasts. Fifteen minutes on foot and the better evening.
3. Hotels in Castlefield
Canal basins, Roman remains and a quieter night. Ten minutes from the hall along the water.
Co-op Live has three events across race week, which is the main pressure on central rooms. Book before the arena sells out rather than after.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Manchester city centre is small enough to cross in twenty minutes, so everything below is on foot.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deansgate and Spinningfields | 3 to 8 min on foot | The glass-and-money end of the centre, closest to the hall, with restaurants that take bookings. | |
| Castlefield | about 10 min on foot | Canal basins, railway viaducts and a Roman fort, with pubs on the water. The prettiest corner. | |
| The Northern Quarter | about 15 min on foot | Independent shops, murals and the city's best bars and breakfasts. Where Manchester is most itself. | |
| Ancoats | about 20 min on foot | Former cotton mills turned into the best restaurants in the city, around Cutting Room Square. | |
| The Oxford Road corridor | about 12 min on foot | Universities, theatres and music venues, with the museum and the Whitworth further down. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Deansgate and Spinningfields
Five minutes from the hall, open early, and full of places that will serve you a plate of pasta without fuss. None of it is exciting, and that is the point.
The Northern Quarter
Fifteen minutes on foot, with independent kitchens doing everything from ramen to Levantine. Better food and a later night than you want.
Manchester food is South Asian, and the city has been better at it than anywhere else in Britain for fifty years.
Mughli, on the Curry Mile
Charcoal-pit lamb chops and Lahori karahi in Rusholme, on the strip that made the city's reputation. Fifteen to twenty-five pounds a head.
Ancoats
The old mill district now holds the best restaurants in the city, around Cutting Room Square. Twenty minutes on foot and worth booking.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- A proper waterproof. Manchester's reputation is earned and January is no exception.
- A warm layer for the morning. It is 2°C (36°F) overnight and the walk is in the dark.
- Shoes you do not mind getting wet, and a second pair.
Quick tips
- Take the train from the airport, not the tram. It is thirty minutes quicker.
- Check the United and City fixture lists before booking. A home game changes the city.
The Arndale and the Great Northern are both a few minutes away and have everything. Nothing here needs planning.
The last race in Manchester
Manchester Central is a recent addition to the Hyrox calendar, so there is little previous form here to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- The hall is one open span under the old station roof, so there is less to navigate than at a multi-hall site.
- St Peter's Square tram stop is a few minutes away and every Metrolink line passes through it.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- WWE is at Co-op Live on the Friday and Electric Callboy on the Saturday, which takes city-centre rooms.
- Eight hours and twenty-six minutes of daylight, and it rains in Manchester.
What else is on that weekend
A busy arena weekend across town, with nothing competing for the hall.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| WWE Friday Night SmackDown | 22 January | Co-op Live, east Manchester | The Friday. Co-op Live holds 23,500 and it is the largest indoor arena in Europe, so the city-centre rooms go. |
| Electric Callboy | 23 January | Co-op Live | Saturday night, the same arena, the same effect on hotels and on the trams out east. |
| Donny Osmond | 24 January | Co-op Live | Sunday. Three nights in a row at the same venue, which is why the weekend is tight for rooms. |
| Football, if the fixtures land | Check the fixture list | Old Trafford and the Etihad | A home game at either ground moves 60,000 or 75,000 people and the trams with them. Check before you book. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
The Science and Industry Museum
On the site of the oldest surviving passenger railway station in the world, telling the story of how this city made the industrial revolution. It is free, and ten minutes away.
Manchester Museum
The university museum on Oxford Road, with a T. rex, an Egyptian collection and a South Asia gallery added in 2023. Free and recently rebuilt.
The National Football Museum
Four floors on the game in the city that codified it, at Cathedral Gardens. Worth it whether or not you support anyone.
Manchester Art Gallery
Pre-Raphaelites, Lowry and a good contemporary programme, free, five minutes from the hall. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, ten until five.
What to do
The Castlefield basin loop
Thirty to forty-five minutes around the canal basins under the railway viaducts, free, starting at Deansgate-Castlefield. The best flat walk in the centre.
The Curry Mile
A kilometre of Pakistani, Kashmiri and Middle Eastern restaurants in Rusholme, lit up at night. Fifteen to twenty-five pounds and twenty minutes by bus.
The Bridgewater Canal to Worsley
Ten kilometres of flat towpath west from Castlefield to the orange water at Worsley, where the canal was dug to reach a coal mine. Half a day, free, and a bus back.
The Aquatics Centre
The 50-metre pool built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, on Oxford Road, GBP 6.30 for a public swim. Proper lanes and a short walk from the centre.
