Should you race here?
The cheapest race on this calendar, in a city whose street food is worth the flight on its own.
Reasons to
- An ordinary meal is three to six dollars and a bowl of pho about two.
- 23.5°C (74°F) in March, while most of Europe is still racing in the cold.
- The Old Quarter, the weekend walking streets and egg coffee, all thirty minutes from the venue.
- Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh are both day trips, and both are worth the day.
Reasons not to
- The air. Hanoi regularly runs seven times the WHO guideline and March is not clear of the bad season.
- Eighteen rain days at 82% humidity, with grey light the whole weekend.
- No rail to the venue or the airport, and the old city is thirty minutes across the river.
Conditions on the day
AIA HYROX Hanoi runs March 6th, 2027 to March 7th, 2027 at Vietnam Exposition Center. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.
The catch
Warm, grey and damp for eighteen days a month
24°C (74°F) by day, 19°C (66°F) at night
Hanoi in early March
- The March average reaches 23.5°C (74°F) by day and falls only to 18.7°C (66°F) at night.
- Rain falls on eighteen days but only adds up to 55mm, which tells you it is drizzle rather than downpours.
- Humidity holds at 82%, and this is the season Hanoi calls the damp: wet air, grey light, nothing drying.
- Daylight runs 06:13 to 18:03, which is just under twelve hours.

Hanoi has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Vietnam Exposition Center, your race is in this building
A very large new exhibition centre north of the Red River in Dong Anh, built on open land with a lotus-shaped dome at its centre.
Known for. Being one of the largest exhibition centres in Asia, opened in 2025 and built in under a year.
The building. Built in 2025 on farmland at Dong Anh as part of Hanoi's expansion north across the river.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At the exposition centre, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Hanoi one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
A Grab, booked the night before if your wave is early. Crossing the Nhat Tan bridge takes about thirty minutes from the centre.
What you need to book
Before you book
Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
There is no rail link at all, so everyone arrives by road.

Getting to Hanoi
Noi Bai is north of the city on the same side of the river as the venue, so the transfer is short by Hanoi standards.
A taxi or Grab from Noi Bai
The only practical route. The airport is north of the city on the same side of the river as the venue, so the trip is shorter than a trip to the centre.
Buses 43 and E10
They stop on Truong Sa street about a hundred metres from the site. A bus day ticket is thirty thousand dong, which is roughly a pound.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
There is no airport train. Book a Grab or use the official taxi desk rather than accepting an offer in the arrivals hall.
Getting to the venue
Dong Anh is a developing district with little in it. The old quarter and West Lake are about thirty minutes away across the Nhat Tan bridge.
There is no rail to the airport and none to Dong Anh, so this is a taxi and ride-hail weekend. Grab works across the city and a fare across the centre is two to four dollars, which makes the lack of a metro less of a problem than it sounds.
Where to stay
The venue is in Dong Anh, north of the Red River, and the Hanoi you came for is on the other side. Thirty minutes by road separates them.
Open in Google Maps · Get directions
1. Hotels in Dong Anh
A developing district with a limited choice, from about VND 900,000 a night. It is the closest, and there is nothing to do.
2. Hotels around West Lake
Lakeside, calmer than the old quarter and the first district over the Nhat Tan bridge. The best compromise.
3. Hotels in the Old Quarter
Thirty-six streets of shophouses and street food. Furthest from the venue and the entire reason to come to Hanoi.
Nothing large is in the centre that weekend and Tet is past, so rooms are at ordinary rates. Hanoi is cheap by any measure.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
The Red River splits this trip in two. The venue is north of it and everything else is south, about thirty minutes by road.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dong Anh | 5 to 20 min by road | The district the centre is in, north of the river, suburban and still being built. Convenient and empty. | |
| Tay Ho, West Lake | about 20 min by road | A lake district just over the bridge, with cafes, expatriate restaurants and a flat path around the water. | |
| Hoan Kiem, the Old Quarter | about 30 min by road | Thirty-six streets, each once a single trade, now wall to wall with food. The reason people come. | |
| Ba Dinh | about 30 min by road | The government quarter with the mausoleum, the One Pillar Pagoda and the broad French avenues. | |
| Hai Ba Trung | about 35 min by road | South of the centre, residential and ordinary, with the cheapest eating and no visitors. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Dong Anh, by the venue
The district around the centre has local restaurants and com binh dan rice shops, which serve a plate for a dollar and open early. Plain and very close.
Tay Ho, by the lake
Twenty minutes over the bridge, with international restaurants that will do you pasta or rice at seven. The easiest night-before meal on this trip.
Hanoi street food is the reason to come, and a bowl of it costs about two dollars.
Pho, in the morning
Beef broth simmered overnight, flat rice noodles, spring onion and nothing else. Hanoi pho is plainer than the southern version and this is where it is from.
Bun cha
Grilled pork patties in a bowl of sweet fish-sauce broth with cold noodles and herbs alongside. A Hanoi dish, served at lunchtime, and under three dollars.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- A mask if you are asthmatic. Hanoi's PM2.5 regularly runs seven times the WHO guideline.
- Nothing heavy and nothing that needs to dry. Eighteen rain days at 82% humidity and 23.5°C (74°F).
- A light waterproof. The rain here is persistent drizzle rather than downpours.
Quick tips
- Install Grab and link a card before you fly. It is how the city moves and it avoids every fare argument.
- Carry small notes. A great deal here costs under fifty thousand dong and nobody wants a large bill.
Dong Anh is still being built and the shops are local rather than international. Buy anything specific in Tay Ho or the centre before you cross the river.
The last race in Hanoi
The Vietnam Exposition Center opened in 2025, so there is almost no history here at all, let alone Hyrox history.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- The centre is north of the Red River in Dong Anh, not in central Hanoi. Check your hotel's side of the water.
- Buses 43 and E10 stop on Truong Sa street about a hundred metres from the site.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- There is no airport rail and no published transfer to the venue. Plan on a taxi or a ride-hail app.
- March in Hanoi is the drizzle season: eighteen days of rain, at 82% humidity.
What else is on that weekend
A quiet early-March weekend, after the new year festivals and before the summer.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| After Tet | Tet falls in February 2027 | The whole country | The lunar new year is over by race week, which is the point: travelling in Vietnam during Tet itself is a different and harder proposition. |
| The damp season | February to April | Northern Vietnam | Not an event, but the thing that defines the weekend. Eighteen rain days, constant grey and nothing drying out. |
| Hanoi's weekend walking streets | Friday to Sunday evenings | Around Hoan Kiem lake | The old quarter closes to traffic every weekend evening. The best few hours in the city and thirty minutes from the venue. |
| Nothing booked into the centre | 6 and 7 March | The exposition centre | The venue is new and its calendar is light, so the race has the whole site. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
The Old Quarter
Thirty-six streets, each named for the trade that once filled it, now a dense grid of shophouses, motorbikes and food. It is free, and the single best thing here.
The Temple of Literature
Vietnam's first university, founded in 1070, five courtyards of walled gardens and stelae on the backs of stone tortoises. Quiet in a city that is not.
The Vietnamese Women's Museum
Four floors on marriage, family and the women who fought in the wars, and far better than the more famous museums. An hour and a half near the lake.
West Lake and the Tran Quoc pagoda
The largest lake in the city with a sixth-century pagoda on a causeway at the southern end. A flat path all the way round, and the closest sight to the venue.
What to do
The weekend walking streets
The roads around Hoan Kiem close to traffic from Friday evening to Sunday night, and the city fills them. Free, and the best thing to do after a race.
Egg coffee
Whipped egg yolk and condensed milk over strong coffee, invented here in the 1940s when milk was short. Thick, hot and about a dollar.
The West Lake loop
A flat seventeen-kilometre path around the water, twenty minutes from the venue, used by every runner in Hanoi at dawn. It is best at dawn, before the traffic builds.
Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh
Two and a half hours east to the limestone islands, or two hours south to the same rocks in rice paddies. Both are full-day trips and both are worth one.
