Should you race here?
A light rail stop at the complex and rooms under a hundred dollars, in a city that eats better than its reputation.
Reasons to
- Stadium Park/Astrodome on the Red Line is at the complex, and a day pass is USD 3.
- A room near the venue averages about USD 95, low for a major American city.
- The hall is air-conditioned, which matters at 27°C (80°F) and 71% humidity.
- Tex-Mex, barbecue and Asiatown are all within half an hour.
Reasons not to
- 71% humidity is the thing people underestimate about Houston.
- Parking is USD 22 with no in-and-out, so a car is awkward.
- A tennis championship runs on exactly the race dates across town.
- Most of the good eating needs a car, since the rail is one line.
Conditions on the day
Academy HYROX Houston runs April 1st, 2027 to April 4th, 2027 at NRG Park. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.

Houston has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
NRG Park, your race is in this building
A exhibition hall inside the NRG Park complex south of downtown, next to the stadium and the Astrodome, with a light rail station across the car park.
Known for. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which fills the whole site every March, and the Astrodome standing empty beside it.
The building. The Reliant Center opened in 2003 as the exhibition hall for a complex that already held the Astrodome, which was the first domed stadium anywhere when it opened in 1965.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page a few days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At the Reliant Center, Halls A to E, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Houston one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
The Red Line to Stadium Park/Astrodome at the complex. Trains start early enough for the first waves.
What you need to book
Before you book
The listing runs 1 to 4 April, so confirm your division's day before booking the last night.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Hobby airport is south of the city and closer to NRG Park, taking domestic and some Latin American routes.

The Red Line
One straight line from downtown through the Museum District to Stadium Park/Astrodome at the complex. A day pass is three dollars.
From Bush Intercontinental
Route 102 to downtown then the Red Line south, about eighty-six minutes for four dollars. A rideshare is forty-six minutes and about fifty-four.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
Hobby airport is closer to the venue than Bush and worth checking if your route allows it.
Getting to the venue
The Museum District is the pick: on the Red Line between downtown and the venue, and the nicest part of the city to walk.
The Red Line runs from downtown to Stadium Park/Astrodome at the complex, and a day pass is USD 3 against USD 1.25 a journey. Parking is USD 22 with no in-and-out privileges, so a car you move twice costs twice.
Where to stay
The venue is at NRG Park, south of downtown on the Red Line. The Museum District sits between the two.

1. Hotels near NRG Park
The venue's own area, built for rodeo and convention crowds. About USD 95 a night and the shortest trip to the hall.
2. Hotels in the Museum District
Tree-lined streets around Hermann Park and the museums, on the same Red Line as the venue. The pleasantest base here.
3. Hotels downtown
The business district at the top of the Red Line, averaging about USD 103. Quiet at weekends outside game nights.
The clay court championships run on the same four days across the city, which takes some stock. NRG Park's own hotels are unaffected by it.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Houston runs north from the venue along one rail line, and everything else needs a car.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| NRG Park | 5 to 20 min on foot | The complex and the hotels built around it. Functional, and the only area you can reach the hall from without transport. | |
| Museum District | about 10 min by rail | Hermann Park, the museums and the zoo, on the Red Line between downtown and the venue. Green and walkable. | |
| Midtown | about 15 min by rail | Dense and lively, with the bars and restaurants, and the Red Line running through it. | |
| Downtown | about 20 min by rail | The business centre and the Toyota Center, at the top of the line. Quiet at weekends unless a game is on. | |
| Montrose | about 20 min by car | Independent restaurants, bars and galleries west of Midtown. The best eating in the city and no rail line to it. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Around NRG Park
The complex's hotel strip has the usual American chains within a few minutes, which is dull and exactly right the night before.
Around Hermann Park
Ten minutes up the Red Line, with plainer kitchens on the streets around the park. Better than the chain strip and still close.
Houston eats Tex-Mex, barbecue and Vietnamese, and does all three better than most places do any one of them.
Tex-Mex at Ninfa's on Navigation
The place that claims to have invented the fajita in 1973, in the East End. Grilled beef, flour tortillas and nothing refined about it.
Barbecue at Pinkerton's
Central Texas barbecue in the Heights, brisket smoked overnight over post oak and sold by weight until it runs out. Go early.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Light clothing. It is 27°C (80°F) by day at 71% humidity.
- A rain jacket for the Gulf downpours, 100mm across the month.
- Something for the air conditioning, which in Texas is set colder than you expect.
Quick tips
- Buy a METRO day pass at USD 3 instead of singles at USD 1.25.
- If you drive, park once. The USD 22 ticket has no in-and-out.
The hotel strip around NRG Park has pharmacies and convenience stores. American shops keep long hours, Sundays included.
The last race in Houston
Hyrox raced in Houston in March 2026. No source confirms the hall or the layout from that edition, so there is little local form to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- The race is in Reliant Center, Halls A to E, which the venue's own listing names.
- Stadium Park/Astrodome on the METRORail Red Line serves the complex.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- Parking is USD 22 a day with no in-and-out, so leaving and returning costs twice.
- A METRORail day pass is USD 3 against USD 1.25 a journey.
What else is on that weekend
A tennis championship on exactly your dates, though on the other side of the city.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Men's Clay Court Championships | 1 to 4 April | River Oaks Country Club | The same four days as the race, about eight kilometres north-west. It will take some hotel stock, though not at NRG Park. |
| Rockets home games | 2 and 4 April | Toyota Center, downtown | Two games during the race weekend. Downtown will be busy on those evenings and the Red Line with it. |
| Nothing else at NRG Park | 1 to 4 April | NRG Park | No other event was confirmed in the complex across the race days, which is unusual for a site this size. |
| Hermann Park | All weekend | Museum District, two Red Line stops north | A large park with running paths, two stops up the line from the venue. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
Space Center Houston
Mission control as it was in 1969, a Saturn V lying on its side in a shed, and a shuttle carrier aircraft. Forty minutes south-east and the thing this city is known for.
The Menil Collection
A private collection in a Renzo Piano building with free entry, strong on surrealism and antiquities, with the Rothko Chapel beside it.
The Museum of Fine Arts
One of the larger American collections, two Red Line stops from the venue in the Museum District. Worth an afternoon between waves.
The Astrodome
The first domed stadium in the world, closed since 2008 and still standing beside the hall you will race in. You cannot go in, and it is strange to see.
What to do
Hermann Park
Two hundred hectares of park two Red Line stops north, with a lake, running paths and the zoo. It is the obvious shake-out and shaded in parts.
Buffalo Bayou Park
A long green corridor along the water west of downtown, with trails, a cistern you can tour and bats under a bridge at dusk.
The Waugh Bridge bats
Around 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats live under a road bridge on the bayou and come out at sunset. It is free, and odder than it sounds.
Eat along Bellaire Boulevard
Houston's Asiatown runs for kilometres west of the venue, with Vietnamese, Sichuan and Taiwanese kitchens. The best food in the city is out here.
