Should you race here?

An NFL stadium under a closing roof, in the month Arizona exists for.

Reasons to

  • 21.7°C (71°F) and bright, which is the best weather any February race here offers.
  • The venue is a 63,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof and a field that rolls outside.
  • Westgate is five minutes from the gates and has the restaurants and hotels in it.
  • Spring training starts around now, and the desert and Sedona are both within reach.

Reasons not to

  • Public transport from the airport takes 140 minutes against 31 by road, so you will need a car.
  • Late February is the peak of the Arizona season and rooms are at their yearly high.
  • Westgate is pleasant and entirely manufactured. The real city is half an hour east.
The one to take seriously. Forty per cent humidity is the lowest of any race in this guide, and it is the thing that catches people. Sweat evaporates before you notice it, so you dehydrate faster than the 21.7°C (71°F) air temperature suggests and you will not feel wet while it happens. Drink more than usual from the day you land, not from the morning of your wave.

Conditions on the day

InBody HYROX Phoenix runs February 25th, 2027 to February 28th, 2027 at State Farm Stadium. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.

The catch

The driest race in this guide

22°C (71°F) by day, 8°C (46°F) at night

Glendale in late February

  • Humidity averages 40%, which is lower than any other race in this guide and changes how you should drink.
  • The February average reaches 21.7°C (71°F) by day and falls to 7.8°C (46°F) at night.
  • That is a fourteen degree swing across the day, so a dawn wave and an afternoon one are different races.
  • Daylight runs 07:00 to 18:24, and the Arizona sun is strong even in February.
  • Daylight
  • Dark
  • Bar height is temperature

Glendale has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.

State Farm Stadium, your race is in this building

The Arizona Cardinals' home, in the Westgate district west of Phoenix, with a retractable roof and a grass field that rolls out of the building on rails.

Known for. Three Super Bowls, the college football championship, and a playing surface that spends the week outside in the sun.

The building. Opened in 2006 to a Peter Eisenman design meant to echo a barrel cactus, with the roof and the roll-out field both built in from the start.

Race day and start times

The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.

Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.

What that means for booking. Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.

What to bring

At the stadium, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.

You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.

What your wristband does not cover

You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Glendale one admits you to. Check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.

Getting there on the morning

You can walk it from Westgate, or drive. Stadium parking opens well before the first wave and the lots are large.

What you need to book

Before you book

Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.

If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.

Flying into the city

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway takes some low-cost routes and is an hour away on the other side of the valley.

Getting to Glendale

Phoenix Sky Harbor is about 31 minutes from the stadium by ride-hail, for roughly USD 45.

Ride-hail from Sky Harbor

About 31 minutes and roughly forty-five dollars. This is how almost everyone will arrive, because the alternative takes four times as long.

  • About USD 45
  • about 31 min

A hire car

The valley is a hundred kilometres of grid and nothing connects on foot. A car makes the whole weekend simpler and the parking is free almost everywhere.

  • From the airport

Entry requirements

Visa Waiver nationals need an approved ESTA before they fly. Everyone else needs a visa, and appointment waits vary by country.
Most visitors will want a car here. An overseas licence is accepted for short visits, and the hire desks are at the airport.
Bring photo identification to check-in. Hyrox has not published which documents Glendale accepts.

Quick tip

Hiring a car is worth considering here. Everything in the valley is twenty minutes away by road and nothing is walkable between districts.

Getting to the venue

Westgate is beside the stadium and has hotels, restaurants and a cinema. Downtown Phoenix is half an hour east and is a different trip.

Parking at the stadiumvaries by event

This is a car city and the venue is a stadium in a suburb. Public transport from the airport takes well over two hours against half an hour by road, so plan to ride-hail or drive. Valley Metro route 70 stops five minutes away if you are already out here.

Where to stay

Westgate wraps around the stadium and has hotels in it. Everything else in the valley is twenty to forty minutes away by road.

Neighbourhoods worth the commute

The Phoenix valley is a hundred kilometres across and everything is measured by road. These are the districts worth the drive.

AreaTo the venueWhySuits
Westgate 5 to 10 min on foot A purpose-built entertainment district beside the stadium, with restaurants, bars and an arena. Convenient and entirely artificial.
Historic downtown Glendale about 15 min by road A few blocks of antique shops and bungalows around Catlin Court, which is the oldest thing in this part of the valley.
Downtown Phoenix about 30 min by road The city centre, with the Heard Museum, the ballpark and the light rail running through it.
Scottsdale about 40 min by road The resort and golf district on the east side, with the desert botanical garden and Taliesin West nearby.
Arrowhead about 15 min by road Suburban north Glendale, with the shopping and the chain restaurants. Practical and nothing more.

Eating before and after

The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.

Westgate, by the stadium

A whole district of restaurants five minutes from the gates, serving from midday. One of them is a sports bar a hundred and thirty metres from the door.

  • About USD 20
  • 5 min from the venue
  • eat early

Arrowhead

Fifteen minutes north, with the chains and the supermarkets. Reliable, dull and open when you need it.

  • About USD 18
  • 15 min from the venue
  • order the pasta

Arizona food is Sonoran, which means northern Mexican cooking that crossed the border and stayed.

A Sonoran hot dog

A hot dog wrapped in bacon, in a bolillo roll, with beans, tomato, onion, mayonnaise and jalapeno sauce. About six dollars fifty, and a genuinely regional dish.

  • About USD 6.50
  • across the valley, 15 min from the venue
  • order it with everything

Mexican food in west Phoenix

The west valley cooks better Mexican food than anywhere else in the metropolitan area and charges less for it, fifteen minutes east of the stadium.

  • About USD 15
  • west Phoenix, 15 min from the venue
  • order the carne asada

Race day supplies

The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.

Pack list

  • More water than the temperature suggests. At 40% humidity you dehydrate without noticing it.
  • Sun protection. The Arizona sun in February is stronger than a 21.7°C (71°F) day implies.
  • A warm layer for the morning. It falls to 7.8°C (46°F) overnight, which surprises people expecting the desert.

Quick tips

  • Do not plan on public transport from the airport. It is 140 minutes against 31 by car.
  • Lip balm and moisturiser. The dryness here is the thing nobody packs for.

Westgate has shops and Arrowhead has everything, fifteen minutes north. This is suburban America and nothing is far by car.

The last race in Glendale

State Farm Stadium is a recent addition to the Hyrox calendar, so there is little previous form here to pass on.

What happened

The last edition, in short.

  • The stadium has a roof that closes and a field that rolls outside, so the floor you race on is not the turf.
  • Westgate, the restaurant and entertainment district, is a five-minute walk from the gates.

What it means for you

How your race differs from that one.

  • Phoenix Sky Harbor is 30 minutes away by car and about 140 minutes by public transport. Plan to drive or ride-hail.
  • February humidity here is 40%, which is drier than any other race in this guide.

What else is on that weekend

Spring training is under way across the valley, and one of the ballparks is in Glendale.

What to see

Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.

The Desert Botanical Garden

Fifty thousand desert plants in Papago Park on the east side, including a cactus collection that explains why the Sonoran desert looks the way it does. February is its best month.

What to do

Spring training

Fifteen Major League teams play Cactus League games across the valley from late February, in small parks where you sit close. Tickets are cheap and the sun is out.

  • Across the valley
  • an afternoon

A desert trail at dawn

The White Tank mountains are twenty minutes west of the stadium and the South Mountain preserve is the largest urban park in the country. Go early, before the sun is up properly.

  • Free
  • 20 to 40 min from the venue
  • 1 to 2 hours

Westgate, after the race

The district next to the stadium is a strip of bars and restaurants built for exactly this, five minutes from the finish line.

  • Beside the venue
  • an evening

Sedona, for the day

Two hours north, red rock canyons and a thousand metres of altitude on top of the desert. The standard Arizona day out and worth every minute of the drive.

  • About 2 hours each way
  • a full day
