Should you race here?
A metro terminus at the door of one of Europe's largest halls, in the week Milan does Christmas.
Reasons to
- Rho Fieramilano is a metro terminus and a mainline station, both at the entrance.
- The Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair opens on the Saturday of race week, around the Castello Sforzesco.
- Milan is two hours from the Alps and one from Como, so the weekend extends easily.
- An ordinary meal is about EUR 19.83, cheap for a northern European December race.
Reasons not to
- December is the worst month of the year for air quality in the Po valley.
- 0.6°C (33°F) at dawn at 84% humidity, with under nine hours of daylight.
- Sant'Ambrogio week starts the same weekend, so central hotels are dearer and busier.
Conditions on the day
HYROX Milan runs December 4th, 2026 to December 6th, 2026 at Fiera Milano Rho. Here is what that specific window is like on the ground.
The catch
Cold, damp and close to freezing at dawn
8°C (46°F) by day, 1°C (33°F) at night
Milan in early December
- The December average reaches 7.7°C (46°F) by day and falls to 0.6°C (33°F) at night.
- Humidity sits at 84%, which is what makes a Milanese winter feel colder than the number.
- About 60mm of rain falls across six days, and fog is more likely than either sun or rain.
- Daylight runs 07:47 to 16:40, under nine hours.

Milan has moved building, moved season, and grown from a single day into the best part of a week. Where you race, and when, changes the day more than most people expect.
Fiera Milano Rho, your race is in this building
One of the largest exhibition grounds in Europe, out at Rho on the north-west edge of the city, with its own metro station and its own railway station.
Known for. The Salone del Mobile, which fills all twenty halls every April and takes over the whole of Milan with it.
The building. Opened in 2005 to a Massimiliano Fuksas design, after the old fairground in the city centre ran out of room. A 1.3km glass canopy runs the length of the site.
Race day and start times
The thing that shapes your travel is not the race date. It is when you find out what time you are racing on it.
Hyrox links individual start times on the event page about three days before the race. A provisional schedule goes up earlier.
What to bring
At the fairground, and only on the day you compete. Registration opens 90 minutes before the first wave of your division.
You do not bring a chip. You collect the ankle strap at check-in, wear it for the race, and hand it back after the line.
What your wristband does not cover
You are given a wristband at check-in. Hyrox has not published what the Milan one admits you to, and check-in is open only on the day you race, so do not assume it covers a second day.
Getting there on the morning
The M1 to Rho Fieramilano. It runs from about half past five, which covers all but the earliest waves.
What you need to book
Before you book
Book flights and the last night around the provisional schedule, not around a wave you have not been given.
If Hyrox cancels or postpones the event, its terms do not cover your flights or your room. Check the cancellation deadline on both before you pay for either.
Flying into the city
Linate is 20 minutes from the centre and takes short-haul European routes, and Bergamo takes the low-cost carriers.

Most people fly in for one race and see nothing. The day before is dead time if you do not plan it.

Getting to Milan
Malpensa is about 40 minutes from Rho by coach, or 51 minutes by train with one change.
The coach from Malpensa
Forty minutes and about EUR 10, the cheapest and quickest way in from the long-haul airport.
The M1 from the centre
Rho Fieramilano is the end of the red line, so you cannot miss the stop. About 25 minutes from the Duomo and EUR 2.20.
Entry requirements
Quick tip
A taxi from Malpensa is a fixed EUR 114, which is five times the coach. Linate is closer to the centre and cheaper to reach.
Getting to the venue
Rho is a town rather than a district and there is little reason to sleep there. Stay on the M1 line and ride out, or near Porta Venezia, which is 19 minutes away.
Rho Fieramilano has a metro station and a mainline station side by side, and no other venue on this calendar has both. The M1 runs in from the centre in about 25 minutes and the suburban S lines stop there too.
Where to stay
Rho is twelve kilometres out and has little to offer an evening. Stay on the M1 or the S lines and ride in, which takes 20 to 35 minutes from almost anywhere worth sleeping.
Open in Google Maps · Get directions
1. Hotels at Rho Fiera
Business hotels built for the Salone, quiet in December. Closest to the hall and a long way from dinner.
2. Hotels around Porta Venezia
The quickest run to Rho of any central district, and the best eating in the city for the money.
3. Hotels in the centre
On the M1 and worth it for a December weekend, but Sant'Ambrogio week pushes the prices up.
The Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair and the La Scala opening both land in this week, so central rooms are dearer and go earlier than a normal December.
Neighbourhoods worth the commute
Milan is compact and the metro is good. Everywhere below is measured by train to Rho, because nobody drives to the fair.
| Area | To the venue | Why | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porta Venezia | about 19 min by train | Art nouveau blocks, the city park and the best Eritrean and Ethiopian food in Italy. The fastest run to the fairground. | |
| Brera | about 35 min by metro | Cobbles, galleries and the Pinacoteca. The prettiest few streets in the city and priced accordingly. | |
| Navigli | about 35 min by metro | The canal district, where Milan goes out. Loud in the evening and the easiest place to find dinner at ten. | |
| Isola | about 30 min by metro | A working district next to the Porta Nuova towers, with independent kitchens and no tourists in December. | |
| Porta Nuova | about 30 min by metro | Glass towers, a raised park and the newest part of the city. Good hotels and a short hop to the M1. |
Eating before and after
The night before a race is not the night for the best meal of your trip, which is harder discipline than it sounds in a city this good at food.
Porta Venezia
Nineteen minutes from the fairground and full of kitchens that serve at seven. The Eritrean places along Via Panfilo Castaldi do rice and lentils better than any pasta you will find.
Trattoria Milanese, near the Duomo
An old-fashioned room off Via Torino doing risotto at about EUR 16. Central, early and the kind of plain plate you want the night before.
Milanese food is butter, rice and saffron, which is not what Italy is famous for and is exactly right in December.
Risotto alla Milanese at Ratanà
Saffron risotto done properly, in a converted railway building in Isola. About EUR 16 a plate and the best version of the city's own dish.
Antica Trattoria della Pesa
A trattoria near Garibaldi that has been serving ossobuco since 1880, to people who are not visiting. Risotto is about EUR 16 and the ossobuco about EUR 24.
Race day supplies
The practical failures that spoil a race weekend are almost never the training. They are forgetting the gels, or carrying a kit bag around a city for six hours.
Pack list
- Proper winter clothes. It is 0.6°C (33°F) at dawn and 84% humidity makes that feel worse.
- Something waterproof. December brings 60mm across six days, and fog on the days it does not rain.
- An inhaler if you use one. December is the worst month for air in the Po valley.
Quick tips
- Buy a 24-hour ticket for EUR 7.60 rather than singles. It covers the M1 out to Rho.
- Validate your ticket before you board the suburban trains. The inspectors do check.
Rho has supermarkets but nothing specialist. Buy anything you need in the city before you ride out.
The last race in Milan
Fiera Milano Rho is a recent addition to the Hyrox calendar, so there is little previous form here to pass on.
What happened
The last edition, in short.
- The site has twenty halls along a 1.3km spine, so check your hall number before you pick an entrance.
- Rho Fieramilano is the end of the M1 metro line and also a mainline station, so there are two ways in.
What it means for you
How your race differs from that one.
- December is the worst month of the year for air in the Po valley, and Milan is in the middle of it.
- Sant'Ambrogio week starts on the Saturday, so the city centre is fuller than a normal December weekend.
What else is on that weekend
The race lands at the start of the biggest week in the Milanese year, though nothing shares the fairground.
| What | When | Where | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair | 5 to 8 December | The streets around the Castello Sforzesco | Opens on the Saturday. Hundreds of stalls, roast chestnuts and mulled wine, and the centre full from midday. |
| Ludovico Einaudi | 4 to 6 December | Teatro Dal Verme, in the centre | All three nights. It fills the hotels around the Castello but has nothing to do with Rho. |
| Otello, the under-30 preview at La Scala | 4 December | Teatro alla Scala | The Friday, and the warm-up to the season opening on the 7th. Expect the Duomo end of the centre to be busy. |
| Sant'Ambrogio and the La Scala opening | 7 December | The city, and Teatro alla Scala | The Monday after. If you can stay the extra night, this is the day Milan is most itself. |
What to see
Written for someone racing tomorrow, not a tourist with a week. Each entry says how far it is, because some of these are worth a longer trip and some are not.
The Last Supper
Leonardo's mural in a refectory off Santa Maria delle Grazie, viewed by fifteen minutes and thirty people at a time. Tickets are EUR 15 and sell out months ahead, so book before you book the flight.
The Duomo roof
You can walk out among the spires and the statues, which is a strange and excellent thing to be allowed to do. Go at the end of the day for the light across the plain.
The Pinacoteca di Brera
Piero, Mantegna, Caravaggio and Raphael in a seventeenth-century palace, now joined to Palazzo Citterio as the Grande Brera. The best hours you can spend indoors in a cold December.
The Castello Sforzesco
The Sforza fortress at the top of the centre, with Michelangelo's unfinished last Pietà inside it. In this particular week the fair is in the streets all around it.
What to do
The Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair
Milan's Christmas fair, running from the Saturday of race week around the castle. Stalls of antiques, sweets, roast chestnuts and mulled wine, and the whole city in the street.
Walk the Navigli
The canals that Leonardo worked on, now a strip of bars and kitchens along the water. Flat, free and the best two hours of ordinary Milan you can have.
A day on Lake Como
An hour north by train for EUR 5.40 each way, and the mountains start. December is cold and empty, and that is when the lake is at its best.
The Naviglio Grande antiques market
The last Sunday of each month, a kilometre of stalls along the canal. Worth checking the date against your race weekend before you plan around it.
